DAVIDSON, N.C. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team fought off a late rally from the Davidson College Wildcats and earned its first win of the season with an 11-10 extra-inning win Friday evening at Wilson Field on the Davidson campus. Senior Mike Spina (Newberry, Fla./Newberry) and freshman Dorian West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) drove in four runs apiece leading UC to its first win of the 2009 campaign.
Cincinnati (1-3) got on the board quickly with five runs in the top of the first inning. With one out, senior Cameron Satterwhite (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) doubled the right field line, before Spina reached base courtesy of a walk. A Wildcat error allowed junior Lance Durham (Forest Park, Ohio/Roger Bacon) to reach base, loading the bases for sophomore Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic).
Riddell smacked a double into centerfield bringing home Satterwhite and Spina, giving UC a 2-0 lead. In the first start of his career, West belted a three-run home run to extend the Bearcat lead to five, 5-0. The home run was West’s first career round tripper.
Davidson (4-2) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and two runs in the third to tie the game at five, but the Bearcats responded with four runs in the fourth to take a 9-5 advantage. With one out, junior Jimmy Jacquot (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) singled to kick things off and moved to third base two batters later on a single by junior Jamel Scott (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto). After Satterwhite walked to load the bases, Spina cleared the bases with a grand slam down the left field line to put the Bearcats in front, 9-5.
The Bearcats entered the eighth inning with its four-run lead still intact, 10-6, but a four-run Davidson rally in the eighth inning knotted the game at 10.
The game headed into extra innings after both teams went scoreless in the ninth inning, marking the first extra inning game for the Bearcats this season.
In the top of the tenth inning, a Satterwhite double, a Spina walk, and a Durham walk loaded the bases for the Bearcats with nobody out. Junior Beach Brooks (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven) catapulted UC in front with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to right field allowing Satterwhite to cross the dish. However, a strike out and a fly out ended the threat.
Sophomore Dan Jensen (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville), who came in to the get the final out in the eighth inning, retired the side in the Davidson half of the tenth inning to give Cincinnati an 11-10 triumph.
Spina and West both knocked in four runs apiece, while Satterwhite went 2-for-5 and scored four runs. Jensen pitched 2.1 innings of relief without giving up a hit to earn the win.
The start time for Saturday’s game between Cincinnati and Davidson has been pushed back from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
