GREENVILLE, S.C. - In the final game of the First Pitch Invitational, the University of Cincinnati baseball team recorded its second win of the season after defeating Furman University 9-8 Sunday at Fluor Field.
Trailing 6-4 in the seventh inning, sophomore OF Jake Proctor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) belted a three-run home run to left centerfield to put the Bearcats ahead of Furman 7-6. Proctor finished the game 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored.
Four batters later, junior catcher Jake Saylor (Chandler, Ariz,/Hamilton) added a two-run double to deep centerfield to give Cincinnati a 9-6 advantage.
Down 9-7, Furman (4-4, 0-0 Southern) still had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. With a runner at first and one out, junior LHP Cory Hough (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) entered the game to get the final two outs.
An ensuring error gave the Paladins runners on first and second with one out when Furman's Taylor Johnson smacked a ball off the left-center wall, but no runners scored on the play.
Hough then faced a bases-loaded and one-out situation. After a deep fly ball scored one run, Hough induced a groundball putout to end the game and give UC the win.
Proctor, senior outfielder Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) and freshman 3B Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) led a Bearcat offense that produced 16 hits. Riddell went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI, while Williams went 3-for-4 and scored one run.
