CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati used a five-run second-inning and a two-run third inning to defeat the Bradley University Braves 10-5 in the finale of a four-game set Sunday afternoon at Marge Schott Stadium. Senior Mike Spina (Newberry, Fla./Newberry) stole the show with two home runs and in six RBI as Cincinnati (4-5) took three of four games from the Braves (3-6).
After a scoreless first inning, Bradley scored two runs on three hits in the top of the second inning to jump in front, 2-0. Cincinnati responded in the bottom of the frame as a junior Beach Brooks (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven) walk and a redshirt freshman Zach Collaros (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville) single put runners on first and second base with no outs. A fielder's choice eliminated Brooks at third base, but junior Jimmy Jacquot (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for junior Jamel Scott (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto).
A fielder's choice off the bat of Scott plated Collaros, and placed runners on the corners with two outs. A walk by senior Cameron Satterwhite (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) re-loaded the bases and Spina quickly cleared them with a two-out grand slam to right field, putting the Bearcats in front for the first time, 5-2.
UC tacked on two more runs in the third inning courtesy of another homer. With Collaros on first base, sophomore Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) hit his first home run of the season to right field upping the UC margin to five runs, 7-2.
Bradley closed the gap to two runs, 7-5, with three runs in the sixth inning, but Cincinnati added a run in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-out RBI single by junior Lance Durham (Forest Park, Ohio/Roger Bacon).
With the score 8-5 in the Bearcats' favor, Spina drilled his second home run of the day off, a two-run shot, pushing the lead to 10-5.
Senior Jake Geglein (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) came in to retire the side in the ninth inning giving the Bearcats a 10-5 triumph.
Junior Brian Garman (Wapakoneta, Ohio/Wapakoneta) struck out six batters and scattered eight hits in six innings of work to pick up his first win of the season.
Collaros earned the start in left field, marking the first start of his career. He finished 1-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base.
Durham led the squad with three hits in five plate appearances, while Scott and Spina added two hits apiece.
Cincinnati continues its 11-game homestand when UC welcomes Dayton and Xavier to Marge Schott Stadium on Tuesday, March 10, and Wednesday, March 11, respectively. Both games are set to begin at 4 p.m.
