CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Sunday afternoon at Marge Schott Stadium. Senior Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) recorded his fifth RBI of the weekend to lead the Bearcats.

Cincinnati falls to 4-10 after the game and starter Grant Walker (Brookeville, Ohio/Northmont) takes the loss to drop to 0-3 on the season. The Eagles improve to 5-8 after the victory.

The Bearcats were facing a 5-4 deficit entering the top of the ninth inning when sophomore Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) hit a one-out triple over the diving centerfielder to put the tying run 90-feet away for the Bearcats. The next batter, sophomore Devin Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) hit a bouncer to the third baseman and Happ, who was running on contact, was tagged out at the plate. UC got a single from sophomore Russell Clark in the next at-bat, but could not muster the tying run.

Sophomores Happ, Clark and Colin Hawk (Beech Grove, Ind./Roncalli) each tallied two hits to lead Cincinnati. The Bearcats recorded three RBIs in the game, one apiece from Williams, senior Ryan Quinn (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) and freshman Connor McVey (Mason, Ohio/Mason).

Williams’ RBI capped a five-RBI weekend for the senior who also tallied six hits in the three games.

On the mound for the Bearcats, Walker started the game for the second time this season. The Eagles got to him early, scoring three runs in the second inning, but the righty settled in, going three more scoreless innings before running into trouble in the sixth. The junior totaled 5.1 innings, his longest outing of the season, and gave up eight hits with five runs.

The Bearcats held a 4-3 lead entering the sixth inning when a single and a double put two Eagles runners on base. Redshirt sophomore Connor Walsh (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) entered to pitch for UC, but Walker’s two runners scored before the damage was done.

Walsh finished the final 3.2 innings for Cincinnati and scattered two hits with no runs and five strikeouts.

Cincinnati was not daunted by the early 3-0 deficit, scoring one run in the bottom of the second and two runs in the third to tie the game at 3-3. Williams singled through the right side to score Quinn with two outs in the second and in the third inning, a single by Happ put runners on the corners. An EMU wild pitch scored Hawk and Quinn lined a double to centerfield to score Happ for the third UC run.

The Bearcats scored an additional run in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Clark doubled down the left field line, advanced to third on a sac bunt from Quinn and crossed the plate following a sac fly from McVey for his fourth RBI of the season.

Cincinnati will next travel to Dayton, Ohio on Tuesday, March 11 for midweek action at the University of Dayton. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at UD’s Time Warner Cable Stadium.
