March 10, 2009
CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team used a four-run eighth inning, which was capped off by a sophomore Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) three-run home run, to defeat the University of Dayton Flyers 10-6 Tuesday evening at Marge Schott Stadium. Riddell and senior Cameron Satterwhite (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) combined for three home runs and seven RBI as Cincinnati (5-5) has won four of its last five games.
Two of Satterwhite’s team-best three hits were home runs and the Cincinnati native also drove in three runs.
Dayton (5-6) jumped on the board first with one run in the second inning, but the Bearcats took their first lead of the game with two runs in their half of the third inning. With one out in the inning, junior Jamel Scott (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) reached base with a bunt single that brought Satterwhite to the plate. With a full count, Satterwhite hit an opposite field home run, his second of the season, putting UC in front 2-1.
The Flyers quickly responded with three runs in the top of the fourth to regain a two-run lead, 4-2, before crossing the plate two more times in the top of the fifth expanding the Flyer advantage to 6-2.
In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Cincinnati began its comeback with two runs to close its deficit to 6-4. Satterwhite led off the inning with his second home run of the day, a solo shot to right field, bringing the Bearcats within three runs, 6-3. Later in the inning as junior Lance Durham (Forest Park, Ohio/Roger Bacon) stood on second base, a single by Riddell into left-center field plated Durham making the score 6-4.
In the sixth inning, sophomore Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) started the inning off with a single up the middle. Peters advanced to second base as an error by the Dayton second baseman allowed redshirt freshman Zach Collaros (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville) to reach base, placing runners on first and second with no outs. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, and an infield single by Scott plated Peters and moved Collaros to third base. Two batters later, senior Mike Spina (Newberry, Fla./Newberry) delivered a clutch RBI single up the middle to tie the game at six apiece.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Bearcats opened up the lead with four runs on two hits. Scott reached base courtesy of an error to start off the frame and advanced to third on a double to left-center field by Satterwhite. On the very next pitch, Spina delivered the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Scott and moved Satterwhite to third base. After an intentional walk to Durham, Riddell blasted a three-run home run to right-center field widening the cushion to 10-6 and that was all the scoring UC needed as it went on to defeat Dayton by that score.
Sophomore Dan Jensen (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) collected his second win of the year giving up one hit in one inning of relief.
The Bearcats continue their 11-game homestand at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, when crosstown rival Xavier comes to Marge Schott Stadium.
