CINCINNATI - Junior Brian Garman (Wapakoneta, Ohio/Wapakoneta) gave up five hits and one unearned run in a career-high 7.2 innings of work leading the University of Cincinnati baseball team to a 6-1 win over Western Michigan University in the opening game of doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Marge Schott Stadium. Garman improved to 2-1 on the season as the Bearcats upped their record to 7-6.
Junior Jamel Scott (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) drew a walk to kick off the Bearcat half of the first inning, before advancing to second base on a balk. Scott moved to third base on a single through the left side by sophomore Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City), placing runners on the corners with no outs. Two batters later, junior Lance Durham (Forest Park, Ohio/Roger Bacon) brought home Scott on a fielder's choice, giving UC an early 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats added to their lead in the second inning with one run on two hits. Junior Beach Brooks (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven) lined a lead-off single up the middle and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt and a ground out. With Brooks on third base and two outs, Scott brought home Brooks on a single up the middle upping the Cincinnati advantage to 2-0.
Another lead-off batter reached base for the Bearcats in the fourth inning, leading to two runs. Senior Cameron Satterwhite (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) singled up the middle to start off the frame and moved to second base on a Brooks single to center field. Both runners moved up ninety-feet on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Nick Rohlfs (Loveland, Ohio/Moeller), and both Satterwhite and Brooks scored on a triple to left-center field by freshman Kendal Coleman (Hillsboro, Ohio/Hillsboro) extending the UC lead to 4-0. The triple was Coleman's first hit of his career.
The Bearcats tacked on another run in the fifth courtesy of a fielder's choice RBI from Brooks, widening the margin to 5-0.
The Broncos posted one run in the sixth on a Pedro Dager RBI double, closing the Bronco deficit to 5-1, but UC padded its lead with a Spina RBI single in the bottom of eighth, increasing its lead back to five runs, 6-1. The Broncos were retired in order in the ninth inning, giving the Bearcats a 6-1 win.
All nine UC players in the starting line-up collected a hit and Scott, Spina, and Riddell all collected two hits apiece.
UC and WMU continue their Saturday doubleheader at 3:45 p.m. as Kevin Johnson takes the hill for the Bearcats and Casey Hall earns the start for the Broncos.
