March 14, 2009
CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball overcame an early seven-run deficit by scoring 13 unanswered runs to defeat the Western Michigan University Broncos 14-10 in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday evening at Marge Schott Stadium. Senior Mike Spina (Newberry, Fla./Newberry) blasted two home runs and drove in five runs to lead the Bearcats comeback.
The Broncos jumped on top of the Bearcats early scoring eight runs in the first inning and a half to take an 8-1 lead. Nathan Marquardt hit two home runs and drove in five runs in the first two frames, leading WMU to a seven-run lead. The lone Bearcat run was a solo home run by Spina.
The Bearcats used a one-out double by junior Beach Brooks (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven), a walk by freshman Kendal Coleman (Hillsboro, Ohio/Hillsboro), and an infield single by junior Jamel Scott (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto), to load the bases for sophomore Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) in the second inning. Peters drew a four-pitch walk to bring home Brooks, and Spina followed with a grand slam, closing the Bearcat deficit to 8-6. The grand slam was Spina's third of the season.
Cincinnati used a walk by senior Cameron Satterwhite (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller), and a single by Brooks to put runners on first and second base with no outs in the third. Coleman attempted to move both runners on a sacrifice bunt, but an errant throw by the Bronco third baseman plated Satterwhite, advanced Brooks to third base, and allowed Coleman to reach base. Two batters later, a RBI ground out by Scott tied the game at eight.
UC took its first lead of the game in the fourth inning as a one-out double down the left field line by Satterwhite scored junior Lance Durham (Forest Park, Ohio/Roger Bacon) from second base and sophomore Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) from first base, putting the Bearcats ahead 10-8.
The Bearcats added to their lead with two runs in the fifth inning courtesy of back-to-back RBI singles by Durham and Riddell, widening their lead to 12-8.
UC continued to stretch its lead with two more runs in the sixth inning. Scott drove in his second run of the day with a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Coleman, before Peters drilled a double down the left-field line, plating Brooks and extending the lead to 14-8.
The Broncos scored two runs in the eighth inning to close within four runs, 14-10, but senior Jake Geglein (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) earned a four-out save to give UC the win.
Brooks and Durham led UC with three hits apiece and Brooks also scored a team-best three runs.
The Bearcats and Broncos conclude their four-game set on Sunday, March 15, at 1 p.m. The starter's for Sunday's game are yet to be determined.
