CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team used four hits apiece from senior Justin Glass (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) and sophomore Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) to split a double header against the University of Akron on Saturday afternoon at Marge Schott Stadium. The Bearcats fell to the Zips 8-0 in the first game but bounced back to win 4-2 in the nightcap.
Cincinnati won the series opener 8-5 on Friday evening to take the series victory over UA.
"I was disappointed in our mental and emotional preparation for the first game and it carried over into the game" said head coach Ty Neal. "We were not ready to put ourselves in a position to win. In the second game we were more mature emotionally and mentally and the result was better. It is important that this club remembers how lucky they are to play the game of baseball at this level, and I tell them this every day. Unfortunately we took this game for granted in game No. 1. Overall we accomplished one of our season goals in winning another home series."
Glass and Happ each recorded two hits in both games to pace the Bearcats offense. Additionally, they both scored one run while Happ had two RBIs and Glass had one RBI in the second win.
In the nightcap, the Bearcats used stout pitching and timely hitting to pace themselves to a 4-2 win over Akron. The home team opened the scoring in the first inning with some fundamental baseball. Freshman Connor McVey (Mason, Ohio/Mason) got on base with a walk before Glass followed with an RBI double into left field.
Cincinnati held a 1-0 lead through five innings, thanks in part to strong pitching by starter redshirt sophomore Connor Walsh
(Wayne, Pa./Radnor). The righty sailed through the first five innings, only giving up three hits and not allowing a run. He got himself into a jam in the sixth and was lifted after 5.1 innings pitched, but ultimately earned the win to improve to 2-2 on the year.
The Bearcats added to the lead in the fifth inning, putting together a two-out rally to bring the score to 3-0. Glass boarded the bases after getting hit and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Happ stepped into the batter’s box and singled to bring home Glass. Two batters later, sophomore Devin Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) singled to score Happ.
The Zips tried to climb back into the game in the sixth inning, scoring two runs before redshirt sophomore Bryan Chenoweth (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon) entered to pitch for second day in a row. The redshirt sophomore bailed his team out of trouble with a groundball double play and closed out the game to earn his second save of the season.
Cincinnati tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning when a sacrifice fly by Happ scored freshman Jake Richmond (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills).
Following the two games of the day, Cincinnati now sits with a 7-11 record while Akron is now 7-8.
The Bearcats were blanked in the opening game of the day, falling 8-0 to the Zips. Freshman Andrew Zellner (Farmersville, Ohio/Valley View) struggled through three scoreless innings before finally succumbing to the Akron pressure and giving up three runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth. In total, UA recorded six hits in the two innings and used two walks and a hit by pitch to get three more runners on base.
Zellner took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the season. Junior Grant Walker (Brookeville, Ohio/Northmont) entered the game in relief during the sixth inning and threw four scoreless innings for Cincinnati.
Next up, the Bearcats will host Wright State University for midweek action on Tuesday, March 18. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Marge Schott Stadium.
