CINCINNATI -- The University of Cincinnati baseball team topped Western Michigan 3-1 Saturday in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Marge Schott Stadium.
Redshirt freshman right-handed pitcher Connor Walsh got his first career win for the Bearcats, going 7 1-3 innings, allowing five hits, just one earned and a career-high seven strikeouts.
Cincinnati (6-9) freshman catcher Woody Wallace (2 for 3) and freshman third baseman Devin Wenzel (2 for 4) each recorded multi-hit games for the Bearcats. Freshman right fielder Forrest Perron and junior center fielder Matt Williams each added RBIs for UC.
Western Michigan (3-15) started off the scoring in the top of the second inning. WMU third Baseman Patrick Duncan had a sacrifice bunt, which allowed first baseman Hunter Prince to move to second and was followed by a double from designated hitter Caleb Caton.
Cincinnati scored twice in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. UC designated hitter Brendon Neel knocked a triple to left-center field, which was followed by a RBI single from center fielder Matt Williams in the bottom of the third. Hawk singled and advanced to second when Williams was picked off, and was driven in by Perron's RBI double to right field.
The Bearcats produced their third run of the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth thanks to two WMU errors. Murray led off the frame by reaching on an error by Moyer, and advanced to second on a single by Wenzel to put runners on first and second with no outs. Wallace bunt singled to Duncan, whose errant throw to first base allowed Murray to score from third.
The Cincinnati bullpen of sophomore RHP Art Warren
and senior RHP Andrew Strenge
threw 1 2-3 innings, allowing no hits and no walks. After tossing a scoreless ninth inning, Strenge recorded his second career save. His first occurred May 21, 2011 against University of Connecticut.
WMU redshirt senior lefty Mike Moyer started and suffered the loss for the Broncos after throwing five innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Moyer fell to 2-2 on the season.
The Bearcats and Broncos will conclude their three-game series, second of a double header on Saturday. First pitch is set for approximately 5:40 p.m. Freshman RHP Mitch Patishall (0-1, 2.84) is slated to start for the Bearcats and will be opposed by RHP Patrick Borlik (1-1, 2.37) of the Broncos.
