CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team dropped the first game of a Saturday doubleheader to Northeastern by a 6-3 margin in extra innings at Marge Schott Stadium.
The Bearcats (7-9) and Huskies (7-8) were supposed to play on Friday afternoon, but inclement weather pushed the series opener to Saturday. Game two of the series was scheduled for a 4:15 p.m. ET start Saturday.
The home loss was the first for the Bearcats this season. UC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but Northeastern battled back to knot things at three apiece in the top of the seventh and scored three runs in the top of the 12th to earn the win.
UC had runners in scoring position in the bottom of the 10th and 11th innings, but was unable to plate the go-ahead run.
Huskies reliever Brian Rodriguez got the win after four innings of shutout relief. He has yet to surrender a run in eight appearances.
A.J. Kullman (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) took the loss after giving up four hits and three runs in the bottom of the 12th inning. Kullman threw four scoreless innings without giving up a hit, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the 12th. He is 3-2 on the season.
UC starter Andrew Zellner went 6.2 innings in the no-decision. Zellner threw 117 pitches, striking out five, walking three and scattered a pair of hits over his first six innings before the Huskies had some success in the top of the seventh.
▪ It was UC’s third extra-inning contest of the season and first loss. UC previously went to extras in the season opener at Northwestern State and home opener against Kentucky, both 10-inning wins for the Bearcats.
▪ UC and Northeastern met for the first time on Saturday.
