UC Wins Second Game Of Doubleheader 10-8

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team earned a doubleheader split with Northeastern after a 10-8 Bearcats win in game two Saturday at Marge Schott Stadium.

Trailing 4-1 in the fourth inning, UC (8-9) put four runs on the board in both the fourth and sixth innings to go ahead 9-4. The Bearcats added an insurance run in the eighth and held off a late Northeastern (7-9) rally in the ninth to even the series at one game apiece.

A.J. Bumpass (Rougemont, N.C./Northern) was a triple short of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-5 with a single, double and solo homerun.

Eric Santiago (Bethlehem, Pa./Notre Dame Green Pond) came off the bench to go 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. Kyle Mottice (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Jackson) was 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs and a run scored.

UC starter J.T. Perez (Orrville, Ohio/Orrville) got his first win of the season, giving up four runs and eight hits in six innings of work while striking out five and walking one. Jared Yoakam (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) pitched 2.1 innings of solid relief and David Orndorff (Pasadena, Calif./Pasadena Polytechnic) faced three batters in the ninth, working out of a bases-loaded jam for his second save of the season.



▪ Bumpass, Treg Haberkorn (Leo, Ind./Leo) and Mottice all had homeruns in the game with Mottice and Bumpass hitting their dingers on back-to-back pitches in the bottom of the sixth.
▪ It was UC's second multi-home run game of the season and the first three homerun game since March 25, 2016 against Xavier.
Ryan Noda and Woody Wallace were the last UC due to hit back-to-back homeruns in a game on March 25, 2016.
▪ Bumpass was 6-for-10 in the twin bill with a solo homerun, RBI, double and two runs scored.
▪ UC's pitchers threw a season-high 12 strikeouts
▪ UC's four stolen bases was a season high.
▪ UC and Northeastern met for the first time on Saturday.

Top of the First
Northeastern jumped on Perez early, plating third in their first at bat. Koppens singled to right field to start the game and he advanced to second on a Lang ground out to short. Hanley reached on a throwing error and Koppens went to third. Burt was intentionally walked and Solomon set a sacrifice fly to right field to score Koppens. McConnell was hit by a pitch. Holzwasser singled to third base to score Hanley and Burt. Madigan struck out to end the threat.

Bottom of the First
Mottice grounded out and Bumpass doubled to right center. Mercer singled to second to score Bumpass and make the margin 3-1 before Thompson grounded into a double play to close the inning.

Top of the Fourth
The Huskies got one back in the top of the fourth thanks to a leadoff homer from Geaslen.

Bottom of the Fourth
Thompson led off with a single thought he left side and was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice by Murphy. Haberkorn homered to right field to score Murphy. DeAnna walked and later stole second. Alldred struck out swinging and Santiago singled to plate DeAnna. After Santiago stole second, Mottice doubled to right field to score the Bearcats third baseman.

Bottom of the Sixth
Haberkorn drew a leadoff walk and stole second. DeAnna sacrifice bunted to the pitcher to move the runner. After an Alldred strikeout, Santiago singled up the middle to score Haberkorn. Mottice and Bumpass then hit home runs on back-to-back pitches. Mottice sent his to the right side of the scoreboard into the construction site at Fifth Third Arena to plate Santiago while Bumpass homered off the scoreboard to make the margin 9-4.

Top of the Seventh
Northeastern plated two runs and made the score 9-6 in favor of UC. Schimmoeller started the inning for Perez and walked the first two batters he faced. He was lifted with a 2-0 count on Burt and replaced by Yoakam. Burt hit a full-count single to center field to load the bases. Solomon lined out to left, scoring Lang. McConnell struck out swinging and Holzwasser reached on an error by Mercer to reload the bases. Madigan was hit by a pitch to score Hanley and Geaslen struck out to end the frame.

Bottom of the EightH
DeAnna was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alldred. Santiago singled to score DeAnna. Mottice and Bumpass grounded out to end the inning.

Top of the Ninth
The Huskies made a late rally in the ninth, scoring two and leaving the bases loaded. Solomon and McConnell singled and Holzwasser was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Madigan reached on a fielder's choice and Solomon scored after a throwing error by Yoakam. Geaslen struck out swinging and Orndorff replaced Yoakam. Koppens struck out swinging and Perry walked ahead of Hanley flying out to end the game.

UC continues a five-game homestand at Marge Schott Stadium and closes out a three-game weekend series with Northeastern at 1 p.m. ET Sunday. The game will be broadcast live via BearcatsTV on GoBEARCATS.com.
