Bearcats Drop American Opener to UCF 7-1|
March 21, 2014
ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team opened its run in the American Athletic Conference with a 7-1 loss at UCF on Friday evening in Orlando, Fla. UCF pitcher Eric Skoglund threw a complete game for The Knights, only allowing two hits and one run while striking out seven UC batters.
The Bearcats fall to 8-12 on the season while junior Ryan Atkinson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) took the loss and goes to 2-1. The Knights are now 11-12 this year.
The Knights scored a run in the first inning following a bases-loaded sac fly but the Bearcats got even in the top of the third. Freshman Jake Richmond (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) got on base via hit by pitch and stole second base. McVey hit a ground ball to the third baseman but a throwing error plated Richmond to tie the score 1-1.
The tie did not last long, however, as UCF scored two more in the bottom of the third frame. Atkinson got himself in a bit of a jam, giving up a single and a walk to put two runners on. UCF’s James Vasquez hit a double to score one run and a sac fly scored the second to put the Knights back ahead 3-1.
Atkinson was lifted from the game with no outs in the sixth inning. He finished the day pitching 5.0 innings with five hits and six strikeouts.
Junior Grant Walker (Brookeville, Ohio/Northmont) threw out of the bullpen for Cincinnati, going 3.0 innings with four hits and one earned run.
UCF took advantage of a UC scoring error in the seventh inning to score three more and tacked on the last run in the eighth for the final 7-1 tally.
The series between UC and UCF continues Saturday, March 22 with a game at 4 p.m. at Jay Bergman Field.
