CINCINNATI – Redshirt sophomore Connor Walsh (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) pitched his first-career complete game but the University of Cincinnati baseball team could not collect the win, falling 2-1 to USF on Friday evening at Marge Schott Stadium. The game was the first in a three-game series against the Bulls in American Athletic Conference play.

Walsh used 132 pitches and faced a career-high 35 batters in the game. He struck out four batters and only allowed four hits with three walks and zero earned runs. The only two runs of the game for USF came courtesy of a UC throwing error and were therefore unearned for the hurler.

The two Bulls runs came in the top of the second inning when a Bearcats throwing error put one runner on base with one out. A fielder’s choice, a walk and a single loaded the bases with two outs, but a single by nine-hole hitter Nik Alfonso brought home the only runs of the game.

Offensively, the Bearcats collected two hits apiece from senior Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) and sophomore Woody Wallace (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) for their four-hit total.

Cincinnati struggled offensively throughout most of the game, but attempted a comeback in the ninth inning. Sophomores Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and Devin Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) were walked and sophomore Colin Hawk (Beech Grove, Ind./Roncalli) was hit by a pitch to load the bases before a wild pitch brought home Happ to cut the lead to 2-1. With two outs, senior Ryan Quinn (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) hit a deep fly ball that looked dangerous off the bat but was corralled at the warning track to end the game.

The Bearcats and the Bulls will continue their series on Saturday, March 29. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at March Schott Stadium.
