BETHESDA, Md. - Senior RHP Dan Jensen (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) pitched a complete game to lead the University of Cincinnati baseball team to a 3-1 win over Georgetown University Friday at Shirley Povich Field.
Jensen delivered a gem of a pitching performance after striking out a career-high 11 batters and allowing no earned runs in a career-best nine innings pitched.
With the score tied 1-1 in the ninth inning, the Bearcats loaded the bases with no outs. Freshman OF Ronald Cotton (Florence, Ky./Boone County) scored from third base on a passed ball to give Cincinnati a 2-1 lead. Pinch hitter T.J. Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to put the Bearcats up 3-1.
It was all the runs the Bearcats needed with Jensen on the mound. His only run allowed occurred in the bottom of the second inning, when GU 3B Sean Lamont reached base on an infield throwing error and later scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Kevin Johnson to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead.
Junior outfielder Braden Kline (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw Community) stroked a double to the left field corner in the top of the fifth to extend his career-high hitting streak to 15 games. He scored two batters later when freshman third baseman Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) slapped an RBI-single to tie the score 1-1.
Cincinnati had a scoring opportunity in the fourth inning after senior shortstop Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) singled to left and sophomore outfielder Jake Proctor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) doubled to left centerfield to give UC runners on second and third with one out. In the next at-bat, however, Peters was thrown out at home after tagging from third base on freshman DH Justin Glass' fly out to center to end the inning.
The win gives Cincinnati (11-12, 1-3 BIG EAST) its first conference victory of the season.
Cincinnati and Georgetown will play Game 2 of three on Saturday at Shirley Povich Field. First pitch is scheduled at 3 p.m. ET.
