UC's Four-Run Sixth Inning Delivers 6-2 Win at Wright State

DAYTON, Ohio — Junior outfielder Justin Glass and freshmen infielders Devin Wenzel and Ian Happ each produced multi-hit ballgames and the University of Cincinnati baseball team defeated Wright State University 6-2 Tuesday evening at Nischwitz Stadium.

The Bearcats were hitless through the first five innings before they hit scored four runs on five singles in the sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Wenzel, Glass and Happ each singled to lead the bases for freshman catcher Woody Wallace, who stroked a liner that bounced off the glove of Wright State third baseman John Brodner, who was playing up, and tied the score at 2-2. Junior right fielder Matt Williams followed with a walk that gave UC a 3-2 lead before junior second baseman Ryan Quinn belted a two-run single.

Quinn’s two RBIs was a game-high as he finished the game hitting 1 for 4. It’s the second multi-hit RBI performance for Quinn in past three ballgames.

Senior left-handed pitcher Thomas Gentile relieved R-Jr. RHP Christian McElroy with a runner on first base and no outs in the bottom of the fifth. The Westerville, Ohio native went on to throw three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three in nine batters faced to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Cincinnati redshirt freshman RHP Bryan Chenoweth tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth innings for his second save of the season.

UC produced the first run of the ballgame in the top of the first. Redshirt sophomore center fielder Ethan McAlpine led off with a walk before Wenzel was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. After Glass flew out to left field, Happ reached on a fielder's choice; giving the Bearcats runners on the corners with two outs. As Happ stole second base, WSU catcher Jason DeFevers' throw sailed to center field, allowing McAlpine to cross home plate from third.

Poor defensive play by UC allowed Wright State to tie the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. With two outs, WSU designated hitter Garrett Gray reached first after Happ dropped a line drive from first base and advanced to second on a botched pick-off attempt. Raiders CF Mark Fowler drove in Gray with a single to right-center field for an unearned run.

Wright State took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Brodner led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A groundball out allowed Brodner to advance to third before No. 9 hitter and second baseman Joe Ford hit an RBI double to left-center.

McElroy, who made his seventh start of the season, surrendered two runs, one earned, on four hits with two walks and two punchouts in four-plus innings.

Cincinnati resumes midweek action 6:30 p.m. Wednesday when the Bearcats play host to the Toledo Rockets at Marge Schott Stadium. UC freshman left-hander Mike Conrad (0-0, 2.45 ERA) is scheduled to make his first collegiate start and will face UT sophomore RHP Alec Schmenk (2-0, 4.30 ERA).
