Baseball Drops Series Opener to Louisville, 13-3|
April 3, 2009
CINCINNATI - A seven-run fourth inning by the University of Louisville proved to be too much to overcome as the University of Cincinnati baseball team fell to the Cardinals 13-3 in the opener of a three-game BIG EAST Conference series, Friday night at Marge Schott Stadium.
Senior Mike Spina (Newberry, Fla./Newberry) led the Bearcats offensively, going 3-for-3 from the plate.
The Bearcats struck first when Spina started a second-inning rally with a single to center field and moved to second base on a sophomore Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) walk. Both runners moved up a base on a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt down the third base line, before a sophomore Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) RBI ground out plated Spina and put the Bearcats ahead 1-0. Two batters later, junior Beach Brooks (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven) looped a RBI single into right field, moving the Cincinnati lead to 2-0.
Louisville took its first lead of the game, 3-2, in the top of the third inning with three runs off of two home runs, but the Bearcats tied it up in their half of the third. Senior Cameron Satterwhite (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third base on a single into left-center field by Spina. Two batters later, Riddell singled through the right side to tie the game at three.
The first seven batters that reached in the Louisville fourth all came across to score as the Cardinals opened up a seven-run cushion, 10-3. The Cardinals continued to add to their lead with three runs in the fifth as U of L's lead reached 10 runs, 13-3.
From that point, both teams went scoreless the rest of the way as Louisville took Game 1, 13-3.
Game 2 of the three game series is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 4.
