BETHESDA, Md. - The University of Cincinnati baseball team scored one run in the top of the 10th inning en route to a 3-2 victory over Georgetown University on Sunday at Shirley Povich Field to complete a three-game sweep.
Junior first baseman Nic Spence (Victoria, Australia/St. Joseph's) doubled down the right-field corner to leadoff the 10th inning. With the infield playing in after pinch runner Ronald Cotton (Florence, Ky./Boone County) advanced to third on a wild pitch, senior shortstop Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) smacked a groundball to left field to drive in Cotton and give UC a 3-2 lead.
Senior RHP Brian Sand (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) recorded a scoreless 10th inning to pick up his thid win of the season. Sand entered the game in place of sophomore LHP Cory Hough (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) with one out and a runner on second in the bottom of the ninth and promptly provoked two infield groundouts to force extra innings.
The win evened the Bearcats' conference record at 3-3 and puts them back over .500 at 13-12.
Georgetown shortstop Mike Garza tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning after hitting a leadoff home run to left field off UC starter Nick Johnson (Delphos, Ohio/St. John's), who left the game with one out and a runner on first base in the fourth.
Sophomore RHP Zach Isler (Union, Ky./Covington Catholic) entered the game in relief of Johnson and surrendered an RBI double to Georgetown second baseman Andy Lentz, giving the Hoyas a 2-1 lead. The run was credited toward Johnson, whose pitching line read 3.1 innings, two runs (both earned), three hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
Isler, who threw two scoreless innings with two strikeouts, was replaced with one out in the bottom of the sixth by Hough, who induced a 6-4-3 double-play groundball to end the inning.
Freshman third baseman Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) and senior OF Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) executed a hit-and-run play to give UC runners on the corners with no outs in the seventh inning. The next batter, junior T.J. Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle), hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Williams and tying the game 2-2.
Cincinnati's offense wasted little time crossing home plate after taking an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. After sophomore outfielder Jake Proctor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) smacked a single up the middle, freshman OF/DH Justin Glass (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) lined a double to right field to drive in Proctor.
Cincinnati plays at Morehead State University at 6:30 p.m. ET Wednesday before hosting conference rival University of Louisville for a three-game series at Marge Schott Stadium starting on Friday.
