CAMDEN, N.J. - Freshman R.J. Thompson (Mason, Ohio/Mason) collected the first two hits and the first two RBIs of his career, but the University of Cincinnati baseball team fell 7-5 to Temple University on Friday afternoon at Campbell's Field in Camden, N.J.

Thompson made his first-career start as the designated hitter and had an impressive performance, tallying two hits and two RBIs. He notched his first RBI with a single in the top of the second inning to put the Bearcats ahead 1-0 and got his second in the fourth with a double down the right field line.

Senior Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) tied a career-high with four hits for Cincinnati.

Sloppy defense was the story of the game for both Cincinnati and Temple as the teams combined for nine errors. Only six of the 12 total runs scored in the game were earned runs with three apiece charged to each team.

Redshirt sophomore Connor Walsh (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) pitched 4.1 innings in front of a hometown and only allowed four hits crowd but took the loss for the Bearcats, falling to 2-5.

With the loss, Cincinnati is now 10-17 on the year and 1-6 in the American Athletic Conference while Temple improves to 8-14 and 3-4.

Thompson's single in the second inning put UC ahead 1-0 but the lead was short lived as TU scored a run in both the second and third innings to take a 2-1 lead. Temple's Frank D'Agostino hit an RBI single for the Owls' first run while a Bearcats fielding error contributed to the second.

Thompson provided the answer for Cincinnati in the fourth inning when he blooped an RBI double down the right field line to score sophomore Colin Hawk (Beech Grove, Ind./Roncalli) from second base.

The teams traded runs in the next two half innings tie the game at 3-3 before Temple jumped ahead 5-3 following the fifth inning. An RBI triple by Michael D'Acunti scored the first run before the Bearcats' third error of the game allowed another run to cross the plate.

Cincinnati's fourth error of the day allowed for another run to score in the sixth in the sixth inning while the last temple run scored in the seventh.

UC attempted a two-out comeback in the eighth when a single by senior Ryan Quinn (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) scored sophomore Kyle Seeger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Reading). A Temple fielding error on the play also scored Thompson, advancing Quinn to third base, but Cincinnati could not muster any more runs, bringing the game to the final score of 7-5.

The Bearcats and the Owls will be back at Campbell's Field on Saturday, April 5 for the second game of a three-game series. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Camden, N.J.
