OXFORD, Ohio - The University of Cincinnati baseball team built a large lead then withstood a furious comeback to beat Wright State University 8-7 in the opening game of the Joe Nuxhall Classic on Tuesday afternoon on the campus of Miami (Ohio) University. The Bearcats will advance to play for the Joe Nuxhall Classic title on Wednesday afternoon against either Miami or Xavier University. The time of the game is still to be determined.

Cincinnati built an 8-1 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, but allowed three runs in each of the final two innings for Wright State to escape with a close 8-7 victory.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and the tying run on first base, redshirt freshman Colton Cleary (Nicholasville, Ky./Lexington Catholic) entered the game to pitch for UC. The righty only needed eight pitches to get two outs and close out the game, earning his third save of the season and sealing the win for the Bearcats.

With the victory, Cincinnati moves to 12-18 on the year while Wright State falls to 15-15.

Andrew Zellner (Farmersville, Ohio/Valley View) earned the win for Cincinnati to improve to 2-2 on the year. The freshman went 6.0 innings and only allowed one run to score off seven hits. Zellner combined with Cleary and freshman reliever Austin Woodby (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) to only record one walk on the day, a season-low for the Bearcats pitching staff.

Offensively, sophomore Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) had two hits and two RBIs while sophomore Forrest Perron (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) also had two runs batted in.

The Bearcats opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning. Perron and sophomore Devin Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) were both walked to open the frame and each stole a base. Clark and freshman Connor McVey (Mason, Ohio/Mason) grounded out and flew out, respectively, to score both runners and give UC a 2-0 lead.

Cincinnati scored one run in both the fourth and seventh innings to pad its lead. A leadoff triple by Wenzel followed by a double by Clark put a run on the board in the fourth and a bases loaded hit by pitch to Perron scored the team's fourth run in the seventh.

The lead exploded to 8-1 in the eighth inning when the Raiders hit five UC batters and allowed two walks before even recording an out. Four runs were forced home before a double play finally ended the damage for Wright State, giving Cincinnati the 8-1 lead.

Facing the seven-run deficit, the Raiders collected seven hits over the next 1.1 innings off Woodby to close the lead to 8-7 before Cleary entered the game to end the damage.

The Joe Nuxhall Classic finishes on Wednesday, April 9 at McKie Field. The Bearcats will play the winner of the game between Xavier and Miami at either 3 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. Check back to the baseball schedule at GoBEARCATS.com for information updates.
