Baseball Wins Extra-Inning Thriller over Notre Dame, 5-4|
April 9, 2009
CINCINNATI - Trailing 4-2 heading into its half of the 11th inning, the University of Cincinnati baseball team rallied to score three runs to defeat the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 5-4, in the opener of a three-game BIG EAST Conference series Thursday evening at Marge Schott Stadium. The win pushed Cincinnati (15-14; 4-6 BIG EAST) to 2-0 in extra-inning contests this season.
Four Bearcat players registered two hits in the game, including senior Cameron Satterwhite (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller), who collected the walk-off RBI single in the 11th inning.
Junior Jamel Scott (Dublin, Ohio) scored two runs for the Red and Black and tied a career-high with four stolen bases. Senior Jake Geglein (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) earned his second win in as many games improving to 3-1 overall. Scott kicked off the Bearcat first inning with a four-pitch walk and stole second and third base during the next two at-bats to move into scoring position. With two outs and Scott on third base, junior Lance Durham (Forest Park, Ohio/Roger Bacon) singled past the first baseman, putting Cincinnati on top, 1-0.
Billy Boockford delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the fourth for the Irish, knotting the game at one, until Notre Dame took its first lead of the game in the top of the sixth when David Casey lined a double into right center field that scored A.J. Pollock. On the play, Casey was thrown out at third base, before junior Tyler Smith (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan) struck out the next two Irish batters to eliminate the scoring threat.
In the UC sixth, Scott led the frame off with a walk for the second time in the game and quickly moved into scoring position on his third stolen base of the game. After a fly out, a senior Mike Spina (Newberry, Fla./Newberry) double down the right field line scored Scott, equaling the score at two.
Three scoreless innings sent the Bearcats to their second extra-inning affair of the season, and after a scoreless 10th inning, Notre Dame used three hits and an intentional walk to score two runs in the 11th, leaving it three outs away from a win.
However, a walk to redshirt-freshman Zach Collaros (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville), a single by freshman T.J. Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle), and a walk by pinch-hitter Kendal Coleman (Hillsboro, Ohio/Hillsboro), loaded the bases with one-out in the UC 11th. Sophomore Nick Rohlfs (Loveland, Ohio/Moeller) drew a five-pitch RBI walk, cutting the UC deficit to one run, 4-3, before Scott tied the game on a RBI fielder's choice, leaving Cincinnati with runners on the corners with two outs. On the first pitch of the next at-bat, Satterwhite jumped on a fastball and lined into left-center field, allowing Coleman to cross home plate and giving Cincinnati a 5-4 come-from-behind win.
Cincinnati and Notre Dame play the second game of their three-game set Friday evening at Marge Schott Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
