CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team lost to University of Louisville 5-3 on Saturday at Marge Schott Stadium.
Cincinnati's offense produced seven hits, but none went for extra bases, and stranded nine runners in a game the Bearcats enjoyed three separate leads.
In the bottom of the first inning, Jake Proctor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) reached base with a single up the middle. He later scored on an errant throw from UofL catcher Jeff Gardner, who tried to catch Proctor stealing third base, to give Cincinnati an early 1-0 lead.
Louisville outfielder Steward Ijames tied the score at 1-1 with a leadoff homerun down the right field line in the top of the second inning. UC responded in the bottom half of the inning when senior catcher Nick Rohlfs (Loveland, Ohio/Moeller) stroked a two-out RBI single to right field that allowed junior second baseman Sam Vandenheuvel (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) to score after he slid under the catcher's tag at home plate.
For the second time in the game, UofL tied the game in the top half of an inning and UC answered by retaking the lead in the bottom half. In the third inning, senior outfielder Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) singled with two outs, driving in senior shortstop Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) from third base and giving the Bearcats a 3-2 lead.
Sophomore RHP Andrew Strenge (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) cruised through the next three innings, allowing just one hit in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings combined. He pitched into the seventh inning until UofL first baseman Zak Wasserman hit a two-out RBI single that tied the score 3-3. Strenge finished the game pitching 6.2 innings with a season-tying high of eight strikeouts.
The game was deadlocked until the top of the eighth inning when UofL pinch hitter Kyle Grieshaber hit a 2-RBI single through the right side of the infield, giving the Cardinals a 5-3 lead.
Cincinnati's final rally attempt came up short in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Bearcats had runners on first and second with two outs, but could not add another run.
UC and UofL will play at 1 p.m. ET Sunday at Marge Schott Stadium in the final matchup of a three-game series. Senior RHP Nick Johnson (Delphos, Ohio/St. John's) will get the start for the Bearcats.
