April 11, 2009
CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team could not overcome a four-run eighth inning by Notre Dame as the Irish took the series finale, 6-2, Saturday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader. The loss dropped the Bearcats to 16-15 overall and 5-7 in the BIG EAST, while the Irish improved to 20-12 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
Junior Lance Durham (Forest Park, Ohio/Roger Bacon) led UC with two hits and a RBI.
After Notre Dame was retired in order in its half of the first inning, UC crossed the plate twice in the first inning, courtesy of a RBI single off the bat of senior Mike Spina (Newberry, Fla./Newberry), and a RBI fielder’s choice by Durham, to take a 2-0 lead.
The Irish threatened to take the lead in the fifth, but with one run home and runners on the corners with one out, a 4-6-3 double play ended the scoring threat and kept the Bearcats in front, 2-1.
After Notre Dame tied the game at two with one run in the seventh, the Fighting Irish struck for four runs in the eighth to take its first lead of the game, 6-2.
The Bearcats were unable to strike in the late innings as Notre Dame took the series finale, 6-2.
