CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team rode a complete game shutout from starter Grant Walker (Brookeville, Ohio/Northmont) to a 2-0 victory over crosstown rival Xavier University on Tuesday evening at Marge Schott Stadium.

Walker threw his second-consecutive complete game for the Bearcats with a stellar performance to give Cincinnati the 2-0 victory. Six days after being named the Joe Nuxhall Classic MVP, the junior went the distance while scattering six hits. He allowed three walks and had five strikeouts and did not allow a run to earn his first-career complete game shutout.

The pitching effort was the third complete game for the Cincinnati pitching staff in the last five games. Walker's last outing was a complete game 7-4 victory over Miami (Ohio) while redshirt sophomore Connor Walsh (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) accomplished the feat with a 3-1 victory over UConn on Friday, April 11.

Offensively, the Bearcats scored just enough to pull out the victory. Sophomore Devin Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) led the charge with two hits, one RBI and one run scored. Redshsirt junior Ethan McAlpine (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) also tallied two hits for UC.

Cincinnati played small ball in the first inning to open the scoring and take a 1-0 lead. After senior Ryan Quinn (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) was walked, a sacrifice bunt by senior Justin Glass (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) moved him to second. Wenzel sent a single into left center field to bring Quinn home for the opening run of the game.

Wenzel was again the center of the action in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Bearcats tacked on an insurance run. The designated hitter doubled to left field and advanced to third on a flyout. A sacrifice fly by freshman Connor McVey (Mason, Ohio/Mason) to deep left field brought Wenzel home for the 2-0 lead.

Cincinnati and Xavier will play the second leg of the home-and-home series on Wednesday, April 30 with a game at Xavier's Hayden Field.

Next up, the Bearcats head to Piscataway, N.J. for a three-game conference series against Rutgers University. The games will be played on Thursday, April 17 at 3 p.m., Friday, April 18 at 1 p.m. and Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m. ET.
