April 17, 2011
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The University of Cincinnati baseball team played the final two innings of its halted game from Saturday and fell to Rutgers University Sunday at Bainton Field with a final score of 17-2.
The Bearcats were set back by six errors that led to 11 unearned runs, highlighted by a fifth inning that saw them surrender seven unearned runs on four errors.
Cincinnati actually took an early lead in the first inning. With bases loaded and one out, junior OF Braden Kline (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw Community) singled to left field to score sophomore OF Jake Proctor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), who reached base three batters earlier on a single of his own. Freshman third baseman Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) hit a sacrifice fly ball to the right field foul territory that scored freshman DH Justin Glass (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) from third to give UC a 2-0 lead.
The Bearcats' lead proved to be short-lived after Rutgers second baseman Nick Favatella tripled to right field for two RBI in the second inning, tying the score 2-2. RU added a third run in the second to take a 3-2 advantage it would continue to build upon.
RU starting left-handed pitcher Rob Smorol limited the UC offense to four hits through seven innings and struck out 12 batters to pick up the win. Cincinnati sophomore RHP Andrew Strenge (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep), who pitched 4.2 innings and allowed four earned runs, was the casualty of the seven-unearned-run fifth inning and credited with the loss.
A torrential rain storm started between the seventh and eighth innings on Saturday and, with the forecast calling for continuous rain the remainder of the day, play was halted until Sunday with the Bearcats trailing 15-2.
When play resumed Sunday, Cincinnati could not muster a rally to close the gap, going down 1-2-3 in the final two innings. RU tacked on two unearned runs in the eighth to finish the scoring.
Cincinnati and Rutgers will play the final game of a three-game BIG EAST Conference series at approximately 12:45 p.m .Sunday at Bainton Field. Senior RHP Nick Johnson (Delphos, Ohio/St. John's) will take the mound for the Bearcats.
