April 17, 2011

Box Score

PISCATAWAY, N.J.- Junior outfielder Braden Kline (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw Community) hit a leadoff home run in the top of the 10th inning to lift the University of Cincinnati baseball team to a 7-6 win over Rutgers University at Bainton Field on Sunday.

In the top of the 10th, Kline blasted a 1-0 pitch over the left centerfield wall, about 10 feet left of the 385 sign, to put UC ahead 7-6. It was Kline's second home run of the season, both of which provided Cincinnati with the winning margin.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Matt Ring (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) picked up the win after pitching a scoreless 10th inning with the help of a spectacular double-play. Second baseman Sam Vandenheuvel (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) made a diving stab towards his right side to catch the groundball and fluidly flipped it to SS Chris Peters (Tippy City, Ohio/Tipp City), who fired the ball to first base that was scooped up by 1B Nic Spence (Victoria, Australia/St. Joseph's). Ring then got the next batter to hit a foul ball popup to catcher Jake Saylor (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) to end the game.

Cincinnati (18-16, 5-7 BIG EAST) got on the scoreboard right away, taking a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Peters and sophomore outfielder Jake Proctor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) walked and then executed a double-steal to put runners on second and third. Senior outfielder Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) drove in Peters with a single to right field to give UC a 1-0 lead. Proctor and Riddell then executed another double-steal play, with Riddell avoiding a putout at second base while Proctor crossed home plate.

Rutgers tied the score 2-2 after producing runs in the first and the fourth innings.

Riddell got his second RBI of the game with two outs in the fifth inning after hitting a double to right field that scored freshman DH Justin Glass (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll), who reached base on a single to left field one at-bat earlier. Kline and Vandenheuvel followed with consecutive RBI hits to make the score 5-2.

Rutgers decreased Cincinnati's lead to 5-3 in the bottom half of the fifth on RU first baseman's Russ Hopkins' RBI double to right centerfield.

In the top of the seventh inning, Cincinnati added another run when, after Proctor led off with a walk, Riddell smacked his third RBI hit of the game with a single to left field to make the score 6-3.

Senior right-handed pitcher Nick Johnson (Delphos, Ohio/St. John's) kept the Rutgers offense in check, striking out 10 Scarlet Knight batters and allowing just three runs in seven innings pitched.

Johnson was relieved in the eighth inning by sophomore RHP Zach Isler (Union, Ky./Covington Catholic), who pitched to two batters before senior Brian Sand (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) replaced him with no outs and runners on first and second.

The first batter Sand faced, DH Brandon Boykin, hit an RBI single up the middle to make the score 6-4. A hit batter then loaded the bases before a walk made the score 6-5 with no outs.

Junior LHP Cory Hough (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) went into relief of Sand and induced a fly-ball out to right field. Boykin tagged from third base and attempted to score, but Riddell threw him out at the plate on a one-hopper to Saylor for the second out of the inning. Ring then entered the game for Hough and got the first batter he faced to fly out to end the eighth with UC clinging to a 6-5 lead.

With two outs and runners on first and third in the bottom of the ninth, Boykin slapped an infield hit to the right side, scoring RU third baseman D.J. Anderson and tying the game 6-6. Ring got the next batter to ground out to send the game into extra innings.

The Bearcats travel to Athens, Ohio to play Ohio University at 6 p.m. ET Tuesday before hosting Villanova University for a three-game BIG EAST series beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET Thursday at Marge Schott Stadium.
