April 18, 2009
JAMAICA, N.Y. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team fell behind early and eventually fell to St. John’s 16-8 in the second game of a three-game BIG EAST Conference series Saturday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The loss dropped the Bearcats to 17-18 overall and 6-8 in BIG EAST play, while St. John’s improved to 20-13 overall and 9-5 in league action.
Junior Jimmy Jacquot (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) led UC with three hits, including his second home run in as many days. Senior Mike Spina (Newberry, Fla./Newberry) drove in a team-best three runs on his 12th home run of the season.
UC made St. John’s starting pitcher Bruce Kern throw 30 pitches in the first inning and the Bearcats used a hit by pitch and two walks to load the bases with one out. Sophomore Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) drove in senior Cameron Satterwhite (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) on a fielder’s choice, giving Cincinnati a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, the Red Storm responded in a big way with five runs on six hits to take a 5-1 lead. The big play in the inning was a three-run home run down the left-field line by Greg Hopkins, his seventh of the year.
Joe Panik lifted a two-run home run in the second extending the Red Storm lead to six runs, 7-1, before padding their lead further in the third with four more runs to make the lead 11-1.
The Bearcats battled back with four runs in the fifth and the inning started off with back-to-back singles from junior Beach Brooks (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven) and y Jacquot. Two batters later, freshman Cory Hough (Lebanon, Ohio/Springboro) plated Brooks on a double to left-center field, placing runners on second and third with one out. Spina took the first-pitch of his at-bat and deposited it over the left-field fence, cutting the Bearcat deficit to six runs, 11-5.
Just as the Bearcats cut its lead to six, St. John’s responded as Joe Panik hit his second home run of the day, this time a three-run shot, pushing the Red Storm advantage to nine runs, 14-5.
Cincinnati continued to fight back in the seventh as Jacquot and freshman T.J. Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) kicked off the frame with back-to-back solo home runs, cutting the lead to seven runs, 14-7. Junior Lance Durham (Forest Park, Ohio/Roger Bacon) started a two-out rally with a double to left-center field, before Riddell and freshman Kiley Jones (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) both walked to load the bases. Sophomore Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) then walked on five pitches to bring in a run, making the score 14-8. Unfortunately, a strike out ended the threat and left the bases loaded.
St. John’s got two runs back in its half of the seventh courtesy of a Tim Morris solo home run and a RBI double from Carlos Del Rosario to widen its lead back to eight runs, 16-8.
A scoreless eighth inning and ninth inning ensued, giving the Red Storm a 16-8 triumph.
The series winds down on Sunday, April 19, at Noon, and senior Michael Hill (Proctorville, Ohio/Fairland) will take the mound for UC against STJ’s Kevin Kilpatrick as the Bearcats look to take the rubber match.
