CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – In a game that featured nine combined hits, it was the ninth hit that proved to be the difference maker as Ohio University used a walk-off single in the 11th inning by Robert Maddox III to defeat the University of Cincinnati baseball team, 2-1, Tuesday evening at V.A. Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.

The Bearcats mustered two hits on the day as they fell to 18-17 overall, while the Bobcats upped their record to 11-23.

The Bobcats jumped out to an early 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning on a solo home run from Gauntlett Eldemire, but after that, UC freshman Zach Isler gave up just two more hits in 5.2 innings to keep Cincinnati in the ball game.

Isler got some help from his teammates in the top of the fifth inning on a senior Kevin Johnson lead-off home run to right field, his fifth of the season, which tied the game at one.

The Bobcats threatened in the top of the sixth inning as Jared Yakubik doubled with two outs signaling the end of the day for Isler. However, he was picked up by sophomore Sam Slavik, who struck out the next Bobcats batter to keep the score knotted at one.

Cincinnati was retired in order in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, but Slavik and junior Brian Sand held the Bobcats scoreless during that stretch, sending the game into extra innings.

UC had an opportunity to take the lead in the 11th with runners on first and second with one out, but a double play ended the threat giving the Bobcats a chance to end the game.

Freshman Andrew Strenge entered the game in the 11th to pitch for UC and retired the first two batters before getting into trouble. With two outs, Eldemire singled and then stole second base to move into scoring position. Yakubik was then walked, but ball four of Yakubik’s at-bat was a wild pitch allowing Eldermire to move to third base. After Yakubik stole second base, Maddox III singled up the middle to score Eldemire and give Ohio the walk-off win.

With the loss, the Bearcats also fell to 0-3 on the season in extra-inning games.

The Bearcats return to BIG EAST Conference action this weekend when they head to Notre Dame, Ind., to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The series begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 23, while the start time for Saturday’s game has been moved to 3:30 p.m. The series finale will be contested on Sunday, April 25, at 1 p.m.
