CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team scored seven runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Morehead State University Eagles 10-5 Tuesday evening at Marge Schott Stadium. In the eighth inning, Cincinnati (19-18) scored seven runs on two hits as three Morehead State (14-22) pitchers walked five batters and hit three more to aid the seven-run rally.

Freshman T.J. Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) led the Bearcats with two hits, while sophomore Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) drove in a team-high two runs.

Morehead State jumped on top early and eventually built a 4-0 lead through five innings.

Cincinnati got on the board in the sixth due to one hit, some patient at-bats, and a pair of Eagles miscues. T.J. Jones led off the inning with a single through the left side, before advancing to second on a senior Mike Spina (Newberry, Fla./Newberry) walk. After a balk moved both runners up a base, a sacrifice fly to center field by junior Lance Durham (Forest Park, Ohio/Roger Bacon) scored Jones and moved Spina to third base. During the next at-bat, sophomore Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) drew a seven-pitch walk to reach base, but ball four was a wild pitch allowing Spina to cross home plate and cut UC’s deficit in half, 4-2.

A lead-off hit by MSU’s Drew Lee came back to hurt the Bearcats in the seventh. Following his single, Lee advanced to second base on a ground out, before scoring on a single that squeaked through the middle of the infield.

The Bearcats loaded the bases with one out in their half of the seventh and a Spina sacrifice fly brought UC back within two runs, 5-3.

In the eighth inning, Riddell led off the frame with a walk, before scoring all the way from first on a double into right-center field by freshman Kiley Jones (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) to close the gap to 5-4. Freshman Dorian West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) and junior Jamel Scott (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) both entered the game as pinch hitters and both were hit by pitches to load the bases. Peters delivered the go-ahead runs with a double down the right field line that scored both Jones and West, giving the Bearcats their first lead of the game at 6-5. The bases were re-loaded when junior Jimmy Jacquot (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) was hit by a pitch allowing a RBI ground out by T.J. Jones to up the lead to 7-5. After an intentional walk to Spina loaded the bases for the third time in the inning, an errant throw by the MSU first baseman on a Durham ground ball allowed two runs to score extending the margin to 9-5. Later in the inning a wild pitch scored Spina which widened the lead to 10-5.

Senior Jake Geglein (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) took care of the Eagles in the ninth, securing the 10-5 come-from-behind win.

Cincinnati welcomes Villanova to Marge Schott Stadium April 24-26 for a three-game BIG EAST Conference series. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m., while Saturday’s and Sunday’s games will begin at 4 p.m. and Noon, respectively.
