Box Score

CINCINNATI – Trailing 8-7 in the bottom of the 10th inning, back-to-back solo home runs by senior Mike Spina (Newberry, Fla./Newberry) and junior Lance Durham (Forest Park, Ohio/Roger Bacon) capped off a 9-8 come-from-behind victory over Villanova for the University of Cincinnati baseball team in the second game of a three-game set Saturday afternoon at Marge Schott Stadium. Cincinnati (21-18; 9-8 BIG EAST) was down to its last strike when Spina hit his 14th home run of the season over the left field fence that tied the game at eight, before Durham lined a three balls, one strike fastball over the right field fence for the walk-off win.

Senior Jake Geglein (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) improved to 4-1 on the season giving up two hits and one earned run in 2.1 innings of relief.

The Bearcats had a hard time getting things going early and the Wildcats took advantage scoring two runs in the second inning, all with two outs, before opening up a six-run lead with four runs in its half of the fifth inning.

However, UC got right back in the game in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out rally. Freshman T.J. Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) drew a one-out walk and advanced to second base two batters later on a Spina single, placing runners on first and second with two outs. A Durham single loaded the bases for sophomore Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) and Riddell cleared the bases with a three-RBI double, cutting the deficit in half. Freshman Kiley Jones (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) plated the fourth run of the inning with a single in to left field, bringing UC within two runs, 6-4.

In the sixth, UC took advantage of a Villanova miscue when junior Jimmy Jacquot (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) reached base on a dropped pop up by the Wildcats third baseman. During the next at-bat, Jacquot scored all the way from first base on a double over the center fielder’s head by T.J. Jones, making the score 6-5.

Villanova scored once in the seventh to move its lead back to two runs, 7-5, but the Bearcats continued it comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Durham led off the inning with a solo home run over the right field wall, cutting the deficit to 7-6. After a ground out, Kiley Jones drew a walk and was pinch-run for by junior Jamel Scott (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto). Scott moved to second on a failed pick off by the Villanova pitcher, moving into scoring position with one out. Freshman Kendal Coleman (Hillsboro, Ohio/Hillsboro) brought home Scott on a pinch-hit single up the middle, knotting the contest at seven.

Two scoreless innings ensued, sending the Bearcats to their third extra-inning game of the season. In the 10th, the Wildcats moved a runner to third base with two outs and the runner scored on a balk called by the home plate umpire moving the Wildcats back in front, 8-7.

Spina and Durham lifted up their pitcher with the back-to-back solo blasts in the bottom of the 10th, giving Cincinnati a 9-8 win, its third straight conference triumph.

Cincinnati and Villanova close out their three-game set on Sunday, April 26, at Noon.
