CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team completed its three-game sweep over Villanova University with a 4-3 win over the Wildcats Sunday afternoon at Marge Schott Stadium. Sophomore Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) hit a three-run home run in the third inning to give UC a two-run lead, and that was all the support junior Brian Garman (Wapakoneta, Ohio/Wapakoneta) would need as he went 6.2 innings and struck out a career-high nine batters to win his fourth game of the season.
The Bearcats got off to a strong start in the first inning and jumped in front 1-0. Freshman T.J. Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) walked to kick things off and quickly scored on a double down the left field line by senior Cameron Satterwhite (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller).
Villanova (18-22; 4-14 BIG EAST) leaped into the lead in the top of the second when Dain Hall hit a two-out, two-run home run over the right field wall, catapulting the Wildcats in front 2-1.
Cincinnati (22-18; 10-8 BIG EAST) struck back in the third and it all started with the top of the order. Satterwhite led off the inning with a walk, before moving up to second on a single through the left side by senior Mike Spina (Newberry, Fla./Newberry) A fielder’s choice eliminated Spina at second and left runners on the corners for Riddell, and he blasted a three-run home run to right field, pushing the Bearcats in front, 4-2.
In the sixth, Villanova’s Joe Rosati hit a solo home run to right field, closing the gap to 4-3.
Junior Tyler Smith (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan) got out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh, cruised through the eighth, and senior Jake Geglein (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) struck out two batters in the final frame to preserve the 4-3 win. The save was Geglein’s sixth of the season.
The trio of Garman, Smith, and Geglein combined to fan 13 batters, the most strikeouts in a game for UC in conference play this season.
Cincinnati travels up the road to face Xavier on Tuesday, April 28, at 3 p.m. before matching up with the Musketeers again on Wednesday, April 29, at 6:30 p.m. in Marge Schott Stadium. Wednesday’s game will be Glenn Sample Day as the Bearcats will honor their all-time winningest coach who passed away on Nov. 21, 2008.
