Riddell's 4 RBI Push Bearcats Past XU|
April 26, 2011
CINCINNATI - Senior outfielder Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) batted 1-for-3 with four RBI to pace the University of Cincinnati to a 7-5 win over Xavier University on Tuesday at Marge Schott Stadium.
Riddell picked up where he left off from last week when he was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
With runners on first and second and one out in the top of the first inning, Riddell drove a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall for a 3-RBI home run to put UC ahead early. He drove in another run in the third inning with a fielder's choice groundball up the middle of the infield that scored senior SS Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) and put Cincinnati ahead 4-0.
Xavier got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the third. After UC starting pitcher Thomas Gentile (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) walked the bases loaded to start the inning, XU centerfielder John McCambridge hit an RBI single up the middle, followed by a 2-RBI double from SS Phil Bauer that shrunk UC's lead to 4-3.
In the top of the fourth, Bearcats first baseman Nic Spence (Victoria, Australia/St. Joseph's) doubled off the right centerfield wall and later scored from third base on a balk by Xavier pitcher Scott Klever that put UC up 5-3.
Gentile exited the game with one out and runners on first and second in the fifth inning. He was replaced by sophomore RHP Zach Isler (Union, Ky./Covington Catholic), who allowed an RBI single to McCambridge before inducing a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning.
In 4.1 innings pitched, Gentile allowed four runs on three hits, with four walks and two strikeouts.
With Cincinnati clinging to a one-run lead in the sixth, junior catcher Jake Saylor (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) stroked a single up the middle of the infield that scored left fielder Braden Kline (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw Community), who reached base on a single of his own, and increased the Bearcat lead to 6-4.
McCambridge hit his third RBI single of the game, scoring left fielder Mark Elwell for the third time, with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to bring XU to within one run at 6-5. Isler was then taken out of the game in favor of LHP Cory Hough (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro), who got out of the inning without allowing another run.
Freshman third baseman Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) led off the eighth inning with a walk and, after stealing second and third base, scored on a wild pitch to give Cincinnati an insurance run.
Senior RHP Brian Sand (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season.
Cincinnati will play Xavier again on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. ET at Marge Schott Stadium.
Note: A 22-minute rain delay began at 3:19 p.m. in the middle of the second inning.
