CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team used a terrific outing from starting pitcher Connor Walsh (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) to topple the No. 12 University of Houston 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Marge Schott Stadium.

Walsh tossed a no-hitter through 5.2 innings and finished the day with seven innings pitched and only two hits. He did not allow a run to team up with freshman reliever Austin Woodby (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) for the three-hit shutout.

It was the first win over a ranked opponent for the Bearcats since May 21, 2011 when they beat No. 24 UConn 7-4 at Marge Schott Stadium.

Walsh took the win for the Bearcats (16-24, 4-13 American) to improve to 4-6 while Woodby earned his first-career save. Jake Lemoine took the loss for Houston (30-12, 7-7) to fall to 5-4.

The Bearcats scored one run apiece in the first, sixth and seventh innings to plate the 3-0 final score. Senior Justin Glass (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) batted in two of those runs while senior Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) scored two runs for the home side. Both of the seniors, along with pitcher Matt Ring (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) graduated from the University of Cincinnati earlier in the day.

Cincinnati scored the winning run in the first inning when it led off the game with back-to-back singles by Williams and sophomore Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon). Glass stepped to the plate and blooped a single into shallow left field that scored Williams to get the Bearcats on the board early.

Sophomore Forrest Perron (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) added an insurance run in the sixth inning with a single through the left side that scored freshman Connor McVey (Mason, Ohio/Mason) from third base for a 2-0 lead. The third run was scored in the seventh when another single by Glass brought home Williams.

The Bearcats will go for the series victory against the Cougars on Sunday, April 27 with a noon first pitch from Marge Schott Stadium.
