CINCINNATI - On a night where the University of Cincinnati baseball team recognized its all-time winningest coach, Glenn Sample, the Bearcats honored Coach Sample the best way they could defeating Xavier University 19-3 Wednesday evening at Marge Schott Stadium. Cincinnati (23-19) scored a season-high 19 runs on a season-best 22 hits, including a career-high five hits from freshman T.J. Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle). Xavier dropped to 24-17 with the loss.

Glenn Sample's grandsons, Maxx Sample and Tory Heithaus, threw out the ceremonial first pitch to get the night started and the Bearcats offense did the rest.

Jones went 5-for-7 from the plate with two singles, two doubles, and a triple, while junior Lance Durham (Forest Park, Ohio/Roger Bacon) went a perfect 4-for-4 with a home run, a single, and two doubles. Sophomore Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) added three hits, which included two triples and a home run. His two triples tied a UC single-game record.

Senior Mike Spina (Newberry, Fla./Newberry) finished 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI's. Spina's home run moved him into a tie for fifth on UC's career home runs list with 37 round-trippers, while his four RBI's moved him into eighth place on Cincinnati's career RBI list with 138.

Both teams scored in the second inning as a Ben Thomas solo home run put Xavier in front 1-0 in the top of the frame, before UC scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Peters lined a full-count fastball into right-center field for a triple to put a runner in scoring position with one out. A ground out by junior Jimmy Jacquot (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) scored Peters and brought up the top of the order with two outs. Jones kicked off the two-out rally with a single into left field, before senior Cameron Satterwhite (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) plated Jones on a triple to right-center field, placing UC in front 2-1.

Another Xavier solo home run, this time from Ryan Bellamy, tied the game at two, but Cincinnati took the lead back in its half of the third. Freshman Kendal Coleman (Hillsboro, Ohio/Hillsboro) led off the inning with a bunt single and scored all the way from first on Peters' second triple of the game as the Bearcats moved their lead to 3-2.

UC added to its lead in the fourth as Satterwhite led off the inning with a walk before scoring on a Spina two-run home run that pushed the lead to three runs, 5-2. The home run was Spina's 16th of the season. During the next at-bat, Durham hit a solo home run that arguably was the farthest home run since the ball park opened as it landed on top of Fifth Third Arena in right field.

After sophomore Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) walked, he scored on a double to center field off the bat of Coleman that widened the lead to 7-2. Freshman Cory Hough (Lebanon, Ohio/Springboro) added a two-run home run, his first as a Bearcat, down the right-field line upping the advantage to 9-2. A two-RBI triple by T.J. Jones and a RBI-double by Spina capped off a nine-run inning as UC took a 12-2 lead to the fifth inning.

After Xavier scored one run in the top of the fifth, Cincinnati continued to add to its lead as a two-run home run by Peters and a two-RBI double by Durham extended to lead to 16-3.

Cincinnati added two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to give UC a 19-3 triumph.

Junior Kevin Johnson (Willard, Ohio/Willard) was credited with his third win of the season.
