April 30, 2011
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The University of Cincinnati (23-17, 9-8 BIG EAST) baseball team racked up 13 hits and defeated University of Pittsburgh 9-6 Saturday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader at Charles L. Cost Field at the Petersen Sports Complex.
After falling behind 4-0 in the second inning in Game 1, the Bearcats jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning of Game 2.
Senior right fielder Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) started the second-inning onslaught with a leadoff home run to left field to give UC a 1-0 lead. The longball was the fourth of the season for Riddell, which tied him with junior Braden Kline (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw Community) for the team lead.
Later in the second, junior first baseman Nic Spence (Victoria, Australia/St. Joseph's) doubled to right-center field to score junior catcher Jake Saylor (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton), who reached base on a double, and junior second baseman Sam Vandenheuvel (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) for two RBI. Two batters later Proctor hit a two-RBI single, and was driven home on freshman DH Justin Glass' (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) single through the left side to put Cincinnati ahead 6-0.
The Panthers produced their first run of the game with one out in the bottom of the second when Pitt right fielder Casey Roche hit an RBI single up the middle of the infield to score DH Rick Devereaux, making the score 6-1.
The Bearcats responded with two runs in the top of the third inning. Riddell and Kline hit back-to-back singles to lead off the third. After Saylor sacrifice bunted to advance the runners to second and third, Vandenheuvel drove in Riddell on a single up the middle of the infield. The next batter, freshman third baseman Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian), drove in Kline from third base on a sacrifice fly to center field that gave UC an 8-1 lead.
Kline's single to centerfield in the fifth inning scored Glass, who reached on a leadoff single, and extended UC's lead to 9-1.
Pittsburgh scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to bring the Panthers to within four runs at 9-4.
Sophomore right handed pitcher Andrew Strenge (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) pitched 5.1 innings, allowed five runs (four earned) and struck out one to pick up the win before being replaced by freshman left-hander Jason Pascuzzi (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) in the sixth inning.
After Pittsburgh pinch hitter Anthony DeFabio hit an RBI single to right field, making the score 9-6 with one out in the eighth, Pascuzzi was replaced by freshman right-hander Matt Ring (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown). Pascuzzi threw two innings allowing one run on two hits.
On his first pitch of the game, Ring induced Panthers center fielder Zach Duggan into a 5-4-3 twin killing to end the eighth and protect UC's three-run advantage. He then recorded a scoreless ninth to get his second save of the season.
Cincinnati produced 32 hits and 18 runs in two games Saturday after recording a season-high 19 hits in Game 1's 9-8 loss. Senior shortstop Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) combined to hit 7-for-10 with three runs scored and two RBI in both games.
The Bearcats and Panthers will play a rubber game of their three-game series at noon ET Sunday at Cost Field.
