CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning but could not hold the lead, falling 6-3 to Xavier University on Wednesday evening from Hayden Field.

Starting pitcher Grant Walker (Brookeville, Ohio/Northmont) put up a solid effort with only two hits through four innings but allowed a costly four runs to score in the bottom of the fifth inning to give up the Cincinnati lead. Walker finished the day after 5.0 innings pitched with six hits and two strikeouts. He takes the loss to fall to 2-5 on the season while the Bearcats fall to 16-26.

Senior Justin Glass (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) and sophomore Forrest Perron (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) each collected two hits to pace the Bearcats offense.

Defensively, sophomore Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) recorded 10 putouts from centerfield, the most by any Cincinnati non-first baseman all season.

Facing a 3-0 deficit, XU responded in the bottom of the fifth for four runs to take a 4-3 lead. The Musketeers jumped all over Walker collecting four hits and earning three free bases via walks and a hit by pitch. Walker was finally able to end the damage with a fielder's choice, but not before XU took a 4-3 lead.

The Muskies added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning with a two-run homerun by Derek Hasenbeck off freshman reliever Andrew Zellner (Farmersville, Ohio/Valley View).

Cincinnati opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, putting up a three-spot off of four hits. The Bearcats loaded the bases following two singles and a Xavier fielding error before a single by freshman Jake Richmond (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) brought home freshman Connor McVey (Mason, Ohio/Mason) for the game's first run. A groundout scored Perron and a single by senior Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Chfistian) scored sophomore Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) to give UC  the 3-0 advantage.

Up next, the Bearcats will head to West Point, N.Y. for three games against the United States Military Academy. The games vs. Army will be played on Friday, May 2 at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 3 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, May 4 at 1 p.m.
