OXFORD, Ohio – The University of Cincinnati baseball team dropped a 9-4 decision to Miami (Ohio) University Wednesday in non-conference action at the RedHawks’ McKie Field.

Miami (21-23) took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth after Jake Romano singled up the middle to score Matt Honchel. The RedHawks added a run in the seventh and three runs in the eighth to make the final tally 9-4.

The Bearcats (18-26), who defeated the RedHawks (21-23) by a 15-6 margin Tuesday night at Marge Schott Stadium, committed five errors on the night and stranded nine runners on base. UC did its damage in the fifth inning, plating all four of the team’s runs.

Ryan Quinn (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) set a career best with four hits in the game. He finished 4-for-4 with a double and RBI. Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) each added an RBI.

UC used seven pitchers, with Brian Chenoweth (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon) taking the loss. Chenoweth, who entered the game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, dropped to 2-4 on the season.

Miami was on the board first after a groundout by Dan Walsh scored Chad Seido, who had reached base on an error. Williams saved a run in the bottom of the second, after sending a rocket home to catcher Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland), throwing out Miami’s Nate Bowles at the plate to end the inning.

UC scored four runs in the top of the fifth after trailing 1-0. Quinn singled to the pitcher to score Wenzel and Murray scored on the same play after a throwing error. Following a walk by McAlpine, Schmidt hit a bunt single down the third-base line to load them up for Happ who lined a single off the shortstop’s glove to score Quinn. After a strikeout and a pitching change, Williams drew a two-out walk to score McAlpine but the inning would end after a strikeout.

Miami tied things up in the bottom of the fifth frame. Sedio singled through the right side to plate a pair of runners, pulling Miami within on at 4-3. Bowles singled to third base to re-load the bags for Walsh. Walsh hit a sac fly to right field to score Crummy and knot things up at four runs apiece.

UC threatened in the bottom of the sixth after Quinn hit a two out double into the left-field corner. Ethan McAlpine (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with two outs but a strikeout ended the threat.

The Bearcats went down 1-2-3 in the seventh and eighth but Quinn led off the ninth with his fourth hit of the night. A single by pinch hitter Forrest Perron (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) advanced Quinn to second but the RedHawks got a timely strikeout and flyout to close the game out.

The Bearcats return home for three-game weekend series with Seton Hall. UC and the Pirates will play at 6:30 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday inside Marge Schott Stadium.
