TAMPA, Fla. - Senior Michael Hill (Proctorville, Ohio/Fairland) pitched eight innings and struck out eight men leading the University of Cincinnati baseball team to a 4-2 win over USF Saturday night at Red McEwen Field. The UC win handed USF its first home loss in conference play. Senior Jake Geglein (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) entered the game in the ninth inning and retired the side in order earning his seventh save of the season. The save also gave Geglein nine career saves in BIG EAST-only action, which is tied for 10th in BIG EAST history.
Senior Mike Spina (Newberry, Fla./Newberry) finished 2-for-4 at the dish, including a home run, and drove in two of UC's four runs.
The Bearcats struck first in the second inning and it was all started by sophomore Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City). Peters singled with one out and then stole second base to move into scoring position. During the next at-bat, junior Jimmy Jacquot (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) fell behind in the count, one ball, two strikes, but came through with a RBI single through the left side placing UC in front, 1-0.
The Bulls tied the contest in the third with one run on two hits, but it did not take Cincinnati too long to regain the lead.
In the fifth, freshman T.J. Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) was hit by a pitch to lead things off and two batters later, Spina hit a two-run home run to right-center field, upping the lead to 3-1.
A senior Cameron Satterwhite (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) solo home run in the top of the seventh widened the lead to 4-1, but USF closed within two runs, 4-2, on a Trey Manz solo home run in the bottom of the frame.
Hill finished the eighth and Geglein set down the side in the ninth to give the Bearcats a 4-2 win.
The rubber match between the Bearcats and the Bulls will be at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 3, and junior Brian Garman will get the start for UC. Sunday's game can be heard live on GoBEARCATS.com.
