CINCINNATI – Senior Justin Glass (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Carroll) hit two homeruns and powered the University of Cincinnati baseball team to a 5-3 victory over crosstown rival Xavier University on Tuesday afternoon at Hayden field on the XU campus in the first of two games played between the two teams this week.

While trailing 3-1, the Bearcats rallied to score three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Glass hit his second homerun of the game to centerfield to tie the score at 3-3. Freshman Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) walked, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch and an infield single by junior Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) put runners on the corners. Freshman Devin Wenzel (Blandon, Fla./Fleetwood Area) laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to score Happ and give the Bearcats a 5-3 lead.

The Bearcats improved to 19-29 on the season while the Musketeers fell to 24-22. Freshman Mark Downs (Union, Ky./Ryle) picked up the first win of his career for Cincinnati and Sean Campbell (0-2) took the loss for Xavier.

The Bearcats opened the scoring in the top of the first when Glass, the second batter of the game, scorched a homerun to right field. The junior battled through a long at-bat and fouled off several pitches before sending a shot over the right field fence and off the nearby O’Connor Sports Center building. The hit gave the Bearcats an early 1-0 lead.

The two blasts from Glass were his third and fourth of the season.

Xavier responded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. XU loaded the bases with no outs following two errors and a hit batter before the pitcher Vinny Nottoli singled to right field to tie the game at 1-1. The Musketeers followed with a fielder’s choice, another hit batter and a flyout to bring in two more runs before ending the inning with a 3-1 lead.

The Musketeers got a runner on in the second but a strong defensive play from the Bearcats forced a double play to end the threat. A flyout to centerfielder Taylor Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) gave XU two outs and a relay from Schmidt to second baseman Happ to first baseman Jeff Murray (Reynoldsburh, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) tagged out the runner to end the inning.

Xavier got a walk and a hit-by-pitch to open the home half of the sixth inning and head coach Brian Cleary brought freshman righty Bryan Chenoweth (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon) into the game. XU used a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third before Wenzel and catcher Woody Wallace (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) combined to throw out the runner at home on a fielder’s choice. Chenoweth got a groundout immediately following to end the inning and escape with the lead intact.

Cincinnati added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning. With a runner on, Williams hit an RBI triple off the centerfield wall to give the Bearcats a 5-3 lead and secure the win.

The Bearcats will conclude the two-game series versus Xavier on Wed., May 8 at Marge Schott Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game has been designated the Ring of Red game for the Bearcats and fans are encouraged to wear red.
