CINCINNATI - In a game that featured 24 combined hits and three lead changes, the University of Cincinnati baseball team defeated Miami University 9-6 Tuesday evening at Marge Schott Stadium.
Cincinnati (26-21, 11-10 BIG EAST) scored five consecutive runs to make the score 5-1, before relinquishing the lead at 6-5 in the seventh inning.
Trailing for the first time, the Bearcats responded soundly in the bottom half of the seventh. Junior catcher Jake Saylor (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) entered the game as a pinch hitter to lead off the inning and crushed a first-pitch roundtripper to left field that landed in Sheakley Lawn.
Cincinnati poured on three more runs in the seventh after junior LF Braden Kline (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw Community) hit a bases-loaded, two-run single to right center, followed by an RBI single from junior first baseman Nic Spence (Victoria, Australia/St. Joseph's) to give Cincinnati a 9-6 lead.
Junior LHP Cory Hough (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) entered the game in the eighth inning and pitched two scoreless innings to pick up his third save of the season.
Offensively, UC was led by senior outfielder Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic), who batted 2-for-2 with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored, and Kline, who went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.
Miami (27-21, 14-7 MAC) took an early lead when designated hitter Adam Weisenburger hit a leadoff home run over the 365-foot sign in left-center field to put the RedHawks up 1-0 in the top of the second inning.
The Bearcats responded quickly by knocking in two runs in the bottom of the second. Riddell hit a leadoff double to right center field and was driven home on Kline's stand-up triple, tying the game at 1-1. Two batters later, Kline scored on freshman third baseman Matt Williams' (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) sacrifice fly to center field that brought the score to 2-1.
Cincinnati built its lead to four runs after scoring three in the bottom of the third. Senior shortstop Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) led off with a double and was followed by sophomore CF Jake Proctor's (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) infield single. After a successful double-steal put runners on second and third, Riddell crushed a three-run homer over the C-Paw logo on the left-center field wall to give the Bearcats a 5-1 advantage.
Cincinnati's offense was efficient for most of the night after stranding just five runners on base, compared to Miami's 10.
Miami put together a two-run outburst in the sixth inning to bring the score to 5-3. MU shortstop Brad Gschwind led off the sixth with a double to left-center field and scored two batters later on a groundball out from 1B Kyle Weldon. After C Nate Bowles hit a two-out RBI double to left field that brought Miami to within two runs, UC starting LHP Thomas Gentile was pulled in place of senior RHP Brian Sand.
Miami continued to put pressure on the UC defense in the seventh inning, sending nine batters to the plate. The RedHawks put three runs on the board on four hits to take a 6-5 lead. The damage could have been worse for UC, but Miami stranded bases loaded in the seventh and eighth innings.
UC and Miami will play Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m. at McKie Field in Oxford, Ohio.
