Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team split a doubleheader with Santa Clara, winning game one 7-3 and dropping game two 3-1, Saturday in non-conference action at Marge Schott Stadium.

Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) finished the day with three hits and Justin Glass (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll), Forrest Perron (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville), Ryan Quinn (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) and Devin Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) each had a pair of hits and an RBI. Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) had a hit and two runs batted in.

Freshman right-hander Mitch Patishall (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) tied a career high with five strikeouts, pitching seven innings in UC's 7-3 game-one win over the Broncos.

Patishall gave up three runs and nine hits over the seven innings, walking a pair and moving his record to 3-4 on the year. Bryan Chenoweth (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon) pitched two scoreless innings of relief, striking out two. Reece Karalus took the loss after tossing six innings and giving up five runs, only two of which were earned thanks to a pair of SCU errors. Karalus walked three, struck out a pair and fell to 0-8 on the year.

The Bearcats took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second inning with Quinn and Ethan McAlpine (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) scoring off a pair of singles, a fielder's choice and an error, giving UC a 3-2 lead.

UC would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth after McAlpine was hit by a pitch leading off the inning. He stole second and third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. McAlpine stole three bases in game one and was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.

UC would build on its lead in the seventh, adding three runs on five hits. Perron led off with a single, advanced to second on a Glass single and to third on a Williams single before Clark singled to center field to score Perron and Glass. Quinn was up next and he also singled the gap in the left center to score Williams.

UC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Wenzel singled to right field to plate Glass, but SCU responded in the second inning with back-to-back singles by Casey Munoz and Jose Vizcaino, Jr. Munoz would score on a throwing error by Bearcats and Vizcaino came home on T.J. Braff's double to left center, giving the Broncos a 2-1 lead.

Game two was a nip-and-tuck affair throughout, tied at 1-1 for the first 7.1 innings. SCU's C.J. Jacobe hit a two-run game-winning homerun to right field off Andrew Strenge (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) to give the Broncos a 3-1 advantage.

The Broncos' Tommy Nance shut the door on the Bearcats, earning the save after allowing only one baserunner in two innings of work that saw him throw 16 pitches. SCU's Mike Couch got the win, moving to 4-8 on the year after giving up a run and six hits in seven innings with a pair of strikeouts. Santa Clara snapped a nine-game losing skid.

Strenge was relieving UC starter Grant Walker (Brookeville, Ohio/Northmont) who scattered a pair of runs and five hits over seven innings while striking out four and walking three. Walker, who walked the only batter he faced in the seventh, took the loss and dropped to 2-3 on the season.

SCU took a 1-0 lead in the first after Harisis led off the game with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored when Casey Munoz hit a sacrifice fly to center field.

UC knotted things up at one apiece in the bottom of the sixth. Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a flyout by Williams. Glass singled a laser shot off the fence in right field to score Happ and tie things up at one.

The Bearcats and Broncos will close out the series Sunday inside Marge Schott Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
