May 11, 2014
CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team picked up some early offense and hung on for an 8-5 win over the University of Memphis Sunday afternoon on senior day at Marge Schott Stadium.
Before the game, Cincinnati honored seniors Justin Glass (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll), Ethan McAlpine (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller), Ryan Quinn (Sparta, N.J./Sparta), Matt Ring (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) and Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) in the final home game of their careers.
The Bearcats (22-27, 6-15 American Athletic Conference) picked up a series win against the Tigers (26-26, 7-14 American) and have won six of their past seven contests.
UC scored six of its eight runs in the first two innings and added a pair of insurance runs in the fourth. Glass and sophomore Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) hit homeruns and each finished with a pair of RBIs. Sophomore Devin Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) and freshman Connor McVey (Mason, Ohio/Mason) also added two RBIs apiece.
UC freshman starter Andrew Zellner (Farmersville, Ohio/Valley View) went five innings, scattering four runs on five hits while striking out a career-best eight batters and moving his record to 4-3 on the campaign. Redshirt freshman Colton Cleary (Nicholasville, Ky./Lexington Catholic) pitched four innings of relief, giving up one run on four hits, striking out three and earning his fifth save of the year. UC's 11 combined strikeouts were a season high.
Bryce Beeler got the start for the Tigers lasting just over an inning and was pulled in the bottom of the second, giving up six runs on five hits and striking out a pair. He took the loss and is 2-2 on the season.
In the bottom of the first, Williams and Happ got on with back-to-back bloop singles to center and right field, respectively. Glass was hit by a pitch and Wenzel ripped a single to left center field to plate Williams and Happ. Glass and Wenzel advanced on a wild pitch before McVey doubled over the third basemen's head to bring them both home and put Cincinnati ahead 4-0.
In the second, Williams was hit by a pitch and Happ homered over the right field fence to increase the lead to 6-0.
Memphis got on the board in the fourth, scoring a pair of runs on two hits and a UC error but the Bearcats extended the margin to 8-2 in the bottom of the fourth with their second homerun of the game. Glass hit is fifth of the season over the right field wall, scoring Happ who had reached on a walk to open the frame.
Memphis continued to chip away, adding another pair in the top of the sixth and a final run in the bottom of the seventh, but Cleary was strong in relief and some quality defensive plays kept the Tigers from mounting a strong comeback.
The Bearcats return to action Tuesday, May 13 traveling up I-71 to face Ohio State at 6:35 p.m. ET in Columbus. UC will close out the regular season May 15-17, taking on No. 5 Louisville in a three-game set in the Bluegrass State.
