CINCINNATI – With a trip to the 2009 BIG EAST Conference Championships on the line, a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning by junior Lance Durham (Forest Park, Ohio/Roger Bacon) scored freshman T.J. Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) giving the University of Cincinnati baseball team a 6-5 victory over Seton Hall in its regular-season finale Friday evening at Marge Schott Stadium. UC clinched the eighth and final spot in the 2009 BIG EAST Conference tournament, which will be played at Bright House Networks Field in Clearwater, Fla., May 18-23.
Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Cincinnati (29-27; 13-14 BIG EAST) was down to its final strike when senior Cameron Satterwhite (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) delivered a clutch RBI bloop single into right-center field scoring sophomore Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) that tied the game at five and sent the contest into extra innings.
Senior Jake Geglein (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) worked himself out of a jam and held Seton Hall scoreless in the 10th to give UC a chance to win the game. With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, Jones squeezed a single through the left side of the infield to keep the inning alive for Peters. Peters delivered another two-out single up the middle that moved Jones into scoring position at second base and brought Durham to the plate. Behind in the count, zero balls and one strike, Durham hit a hard ground ball to the right of the first baseman and as the first baseman dove to try and keep the ball in the infield, the ball bounced away from him allowing Jones to score all the way from second to give UC the dramatic win.
The walk-off single by Durham was his second hit of the game, moving him pass Kevin Youkilis as UC’s single-season hits leader. Durham has 97 hits this season and Youkilis previously held the record with 96 hits in 1999.
UC jumped in front in the first on a two-run home run by Peters and after Seton Hall cut the lead in half, 2-1, with one run in the third, a two-run home run by Durham in the bottom of the third lifted Cincinnati to a 4-1 advantage.
The Bearcats looked to pad to their three-run margin in the bottom of the fifth inning with the bases loaded and one out, but a double play ended the scoring threat and gave Seton Hall momentum heading into the sixth inning. The Pirates scored three runs on four hits in the sixth, tying the game at four.
Two scoreless innings ensued before a Charlie Rivera RBI single in the ninth gave Seton Hall its first lead of the game, 5-4. From that point, Satterwhite sent the game to extra innings with an RBI single before Durham sent the Bearcats faithful home happy with the walk-off RBI single.
Jones led UC with four hits, while Peters and Durham drove in two and three runs, respectively. Geglein moved to 6-1 on the season with the win.
In the first round of the 2009 BIG EAST Tournament, The No. 8 Bearcats will take on BIG EAST regular-season champion Louisville on Tuesday, May 19. Game time has yet to be determined.
