CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision to the No. 5 University of Louisville on Friday night in the second game of the series.

For the second straight game, UC scored first, but could not stop the Cardinals’ offense, falling in an identical 5-1 score. The loss moves Cincinnati to 22-30 on the season and 6-17 in the American Athletic Conference while Louisville improves to 42-13 and 18-5.

Redshirt sophomore Connor Walsh (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) got the start for the Bearcats and went 4.1 innings with seven hits, three runs, four strikeouts and two walks. He takes the loss and falls to 5-8 on the year.

The Bearcats opened the scoring, notching a run in the top of the second inning to go ahead 1-0. Sophomore Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) singled for the first hit of the game and stole second base to get himself in scoring position. Sophomore Devin Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) followed with a double to center field to score Happ and give the Bearcats the early advantage.

Cincinnati held the lead through the bottom of the fourth inning when Louisville connected for two runs. A solo homerun to right field by Jeff Gardner tied the game and three batters later, UofL manufactured another run with an RBI-double by Shane Crain.

UofL recorded one run apiece in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings for the final 5-1 score.

After a Memphis victory on Thursday, the loss to the Cardinals mathematically eliminates the Bearcats from postseason play.

Cincinnati will conclude its season on Saturday with the final game of the series against Louisville. The first pitch is set to begin at 1 p.m. from Jim Patterson Stadium.
