UC Scores Wild Walk-off Win|
May 17, 2011
CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati secured its first winning record in three seasons after defeating Butler University 13-12 in come-from-behind fashion Tuesday evening at Marge Schott Stadium.
Trailing 12-10 in their final at-bat, the Bearcats had runners on the corners with one out when senior shortstop Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) hit an RBI single up the middle to pull UC within one run at 12-11. Two batters later, freshman DH Justin Glass (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) hit a two-out RBI single to right field that tied the game 12-12. With senior OF Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) facing runners on the corners and two outs, the first pitch thrown from Butler RHP Jared Earle bounced toward the backstop and allowed Peters to score from third, giving UC the win.
As good as the UC offense was, the pitching was equally subpar. Eight Cincinnati pitchers surrendered 17 hits, walked eight batters and threw four wild pitches. Junior RHP Sam Slavik (Coldwater, Ohio/Coldwater) earned his first win of the season after throwing a scoreless ninth inning.
Butler jumped out to an early three-run lead after recording five hits in the top of the first inning, causing starting pitcher Brad Mergen (Albany, Minn./Albany) to be relieved after recording two outs.
The Bearcats responded by combining for 10 consecutive runs in their first three at-bats.
In the bottom of the first inning, Glass and Riddell drove in runs on consecutive at-bats to bring UC to within one at 3-2. In the second inning, sophomore CF Jake Proctor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) and Glass recorded consecutive RBI hits down the left-field line to lead UC to a three-run second and give UC its first lead of the game at 5-3.
The third inning saw Cincinnati bat around the lineup and explode for five runs, highlighted by three Bearcat solo homers. Junior 2B T.J. Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) and junior 1B Nick Spence (Victoria, Australia/St. Joseph's) led off the inning with back-to-back longballs down the right-field line. Two batters later, senior catcher Nick Rolhfs (Loveland, Ohio/Moeller) was given a do-over after Butler first baseman Grant Fillipitch dropped a foul ball. Rohlfs made the Bulldogs pay by smashing his first home run of the season to left field, a one-out shot to left field that increased UC's lead to 10-3.
The seven-run lead did not last for Cincinnati as Butler scored three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to knot the score 10-10.
The Bulldogs regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning when SS Luke Duncan hit an RBI single to right field, making the lead 11-10. BU added to the lead in the eighth with a two-out RBI single to right field from RF Michael Hoscheit to make the score 12-10.
Cincinnati concludes its regular-season schedule with a three-game home series against 2011 BIG EAST champion University of Connecticut beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET Thursday at Marge Schott Stadium.
