CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team tallied 10 hits but stranded 12 runners on base in a 9-1 loss to Notre Dame, Friday in BIG EAST Conference action inside Marge Schott Stadium.

Notre Dame (31-22, 10-13 BIG EAST) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning and didn't look back, adding six runs over the final three innings while pitching out of a bases-loaded jam and UC runners in scoring position in two of the three frames. Cincinnati (23-32, 5-18 BIG EAST) has stranded 22 runners in the first two games of the series.

The Bearcats finally got on the board in the eighth, but would only post a single run which game on an RBI groundout by Taylor Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) which plated Ethan McAlpine (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller).

McAlpine was 3-for-4 on the night with a run scored. Schmidt and Devin Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) each added a pair of hits.

Grant Walker (Brookeville, Ohio/Northmont) started off strong, holding the Irish scoreless over the first five innings, but couldn't hold the edge, allowing two runs to score and being charged with the third after being lifted for Bryan Chenoweth (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon) in the sixth. Walker took the loss and fell to 2-4 on the year. Christian McElroy (Middletown, Ohio/Monroe/Sinclair CC) surrendered six runs in three innings of relief.


 

 

Pat Connaughton picked up the win for Notre Dame after scattering nine hits over six innings of work with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.

The Bearcats and Irish will close out the regular season Saturday at Marge Schott Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. ET. UC's senior class: Thomas Gentile (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales), J.P. Jackson (Bowling Green, Ky./Western Kentucky) and Andrew Strenge (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.

Saturday's games will be televised by the CBS Sports Network. Brent Stover (play-by-play) and C.J. Nitkowski (analyst) will have the call.
