CINCINNATI — The Red team took Game 1 of the University of Cincinnati baseball team’s Red & Black World Series with a 5-1 win over the Black team Friday evening at Marge Schott Stadium.
Junior outfielder Brendon Neel led the Red offense with a 2-for-4 night at the plate with two runs scored, while freshman Connor Weir provided a clutch two-run pinch-hit single.
The Red squad pulled away with three insurance runs in the fifth inning to go up by a 5-1 margin. With one out, Neel doubled to right center and then stole third. Freshman outfielder Brennan Laird drove in Neel with a sacrifice fly to center field. Freshman catcher Russell Clark singled to shortstop before senior shortstop J.P. Jackson and freshman Kyle Seeger both reached on balls to load the bases. After freshman RHP Austin Pritchard went in to relieve lefty Mark Downs, Weir pinched hit for freshman Anthony Hunt and singled through the left side for two RBIs.
Senior right-hander Andrew Strenge went four innings, allowing one run and striking out three to pick up the win for the Red team. His counterpart, redshirt junior RHP Christian McElroy, allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with six strikeouts and four walks in 3 2-3 innings.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, Neel singled to left center, and then stole second. A walk, followed by a balk put runners on the first and second. Clark smacked a grounder to third baseman Devin Wenzel, who dropped the ball and allowed Neel to score for a 1-0 Red team lead.
The Black team knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the third inning when redshirt freshman outfielder Taylor Schmidt singled through the right side of the infield, which allowed Hawk, who hit a one-out double to left center, to score.
The Red team regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Laird walked and Clark doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. After a strikeout, back-to-back walks allowed Laird to score and gave the Red team a 2-1 advantage.
Game 2 of the Red & Black World Series will begin at noon Saturday at Marge Schott Stadium. Sophomore RHP Matthew Lathuras will take the mound for the Red team and face redshirt freshman righty Connor Walsh for the Black squad. The game can will be video streamed live on GoBEARCATS.com.
