Feb. 2, 2009
CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team held its first official practice on Sunday, Feb. 1, as the Bearcats prepare for the inaugural BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge Feb. 20-22 in St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Fla. During the first day of practice, thirteen-year head coach Brian Cleary announced that the captain for the 2009 squad will be senior Jake Geglein (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas).
"Jake is coming off a great season last year," Cleary said. "He is incredibly well respected by our staff and his teammates, who selected him as captain, which I think is a great choice."
Last season, Geglein saw action in 26 games out of the bullpen, and owned an ERA of 2.30. He struck out 36 and gave up just seven walks in 43.0 innings and went the entire season giving up just four extra-base hits. Geglein did not give up an earned run in 20 of 26 appearances and his 26 appearances tie for ninth on the UC single-season appearances chart.
The Bearcats kick off their season on Friday, Feb. 20, vs. Purdue at 1 p.m., before taking on Michigan and Ohio State on Saturday, Feb. 21, and Sunday, Feb. 22, respectively.
"The start of the season is upon us. We are very excited about playing in the inaugural BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge where we will be tested against strong competition in great weather and at some great stadiums," Cleary added.
