CINCINNATI – Former University of Cincinnati great and current Boston Red Sox infielder Kevin Youkilis recently made a significant leadership gift to help fund his alma mater’s baseball program.
With his generous donation, Youkilis, a two-time All-American at Cincinnati, also became a charter member of the Glenn Sample Society, the highest level of giving within the UCATS Diamond Club.
"I am so thankful for the four great years I had as a baseball player and a student at the University of Cincinnati," said Youkilis, who has twice been named an American League All-Star with Boston. "UC has always been close to my heart and the pride I have for the Bearcats is endless. I wanted to help give back to UC by donating a scholarship to the baseball program. Without my experiences at the University of Cincinnati, I would not be where I am at today. Hopefully, this scholarship will allow another UC baseball player to excel in life, not just baseball."
The Diamond Club provides financial support vital to the success of UC Baseball. The monies raised through the Diamond Club supplement the UC baseball program's budget in two main areas, both of which are central in the fight to win a BIG EAST Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
First, the Diamond Club provides funds to help offset expenses such as team travel, recruiting, equipment, and facility improvements. Secondly, the Glenn Sample Society generates funds that will allow the program to meet its scholarship goals.
"Kevin has been very active in supporting a number of great causes, so it's very meaningful that he has decided to also support UC Baseball," said UC head coach Brian Cleary."Youk's gift is a very visible sign of his love for UC and UC baseball, but it also gives us a great head start in our plan to enhance baseball scholarships," said Cleary. "This will positively impact UC Baseball for many years to come and we are thankful for him remaining so close to our program."
The baseball program will host the sold-out First Pitch Reception at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, at Green Diamond Gallery in Montgomery, Ohio.
One week later on Friday, Feb. 18, the Bearcats open their 2011 season against Ohio State at the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge in St. Petersburg, Fla.
