The University of Cincinnati baseball team opens its home portion of the 2012 season when it plays host to Oakland (Mich.) University in a four-game series Friday through Sunday at Marge Schott Stadium. The series opens 4 p.m. Friday and will feature UC ace right-hander Andrew Strenge. The Bearcats and Grizzlies will play two on Saturday, with freshman southpaw Zach Morris slated to make his first start for the Bearcats in Game 1 of the 1 p.m. doubleheader. Sophomore RHP Matt Ring takes the mound for the second game of the twinbill, which will start 30 minutes after Game 1. Cincinnati will throw redshirt sophomore righty Christian McElroy in the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday. Both Saturday games, as well as Sunday’s finale, will be video streamed live on GoBEARCATS.com/allaccess.
SETTING THE SCENE
-With nearly 1,000 season tickets sold, excitement is in the air for the Bearcats baseball program as they open their home schedule on Friday at beautiful Marge Schott Stadium.
-After opening the season with three tough losses in the Big Ten/BIG EAST Baseball Challenge, UC recorded a 1-2 weekend at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. last Friday through Sunday.
-Cincy dropped the WFU Invite opener to BIG EAST foe Georgetown 11-6 on Friday. In the second game, Wake Forest won 7-0 over Cincy, before the Bearcats defeated UMBC on the final day 13-0.
-This weekend will mark the second series between Cincinnati and Oakland.
-Cincinnati owns a 3-0 edge in the all-time matchup after sweeping the Grizzlies in a three-game series March 18-19, 2006.
-The Bearcats outscored OU 49-24 during that ’06 series, which was played at Marge Schott Stadium.
ON THE MOUND FOR THE BEARCATS
-Junior RHP Andrew Strenge will take the ball for the Bearcats on Friday. In the season opener against Oakland. Strenge pitched five innings, struck out eight batters and allowed just one earned run on six hits in his previous start vs. Georgetown.
-Freshman left-hander Zach Morris will take the mound in Saturday’s first of two ballgames. Morris will be making his first career start after pitching in two previous games out of the bullpen.
-Sophomore RHP Matt Ring will make his third collegiate start in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Ring threw just 1.2 innings at Wake Forest after allowing four runs on six hits.
-Redshirt sophomore RHP Christian McElroy is coming off an impressive performance in UC’s 13-0 win over UMBC on Sunday. McElroy earned his first career win after allowing just three hits and striking out four in five shutout innings.
-The Grizzlies are 0-4 on the young 2012 season, after losing at No. 12 Vanderbilt on Feb. 22 and getting swept in a three-game series at No. 24 Louisville, Feb. 24-26.
-OU fifth-year senior outfielder Tim Ryan leads the team with five runs scored and a .444 batting average after going 8-for-18 in the opening weekend.
-Ryan has a hit in every game this season to extend a six-game hitting streak and a 13-game reached base streak that dates back to last season.
-Senior OF Aaron Cieslak is the lone Grizzly with a home run this year and leads the team with 4 RBI.
-Opponents are hitting .351 with four home runs and a .504 slugging percentage off of Oakland pitching this year.
-The Grizzlies have surrendered 12 stolen bases in 17 attempts through four games in 2012.
SHOWING THE GLOVE
-Cincinnati leads the BIG EAST Conference with a .971 fielding percentage as a team.
-Senior catcher Jake Saylor is tied for first in the conference with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, while having the 10th most field chances at 47.
-Saylor is tied for second in the conference in runners caught stealing with four despite missing the 2012 season opener.
