SETTING THE SCENE
-The University of Cincinnati baseball team plays its final nonconference series of 2013 when the Bearcats host the Western Michigan Broncos for three games, Friday through Sunday, at Marge Schott Stadium.
-The Bearcats are looking to end a four-game losing streak after suffering a midweek defeat to reigning Big Ten Conference champion Purdue, 7-4, on Tuesday and getting swept in a three-game series at home versus Eastern Michigan. UC had won four consecutive ballgames prior to the EMU series, after starting the season 0-5.
-UC sophomore RHP Matthew Lathuras will make his first collegiate start on Friday in the series opener.
R-Fr. Connor Walsh will take the mound for the Bearcats on Saturday after tossing 6 1-3 innings of one-run baseball in his last start on March 9 vs. EMU.
-All three games vs. Western Michigan will be video streamed live on GoBEARCATS.com (subscription required).

NOW PITCHING FOR UC ...
-In the series opener vs. Western Michigan on Friday, UC will hand the ball to sophomore right-handed pitcher Matthew Lathuras, who will be making his first collegiate start.
-Lathuras has appeared in three ballgames in 2013, all out of the bullpen. He owns a 0.90 earned run average in 10 innings pitched with six walks and eight strikeouts while holding opponents to a .222 batting average.
-Game 2 of the Western Michigan series will feature redshirt freshman RHP Connor Walsh, who made his collegiate debut on Sunday, Feb. 17 at FAU after sitting out the entire 2012 season due to arm surgery. Walsh allowed three earned runs on four hits with one strikeout and three walks in 3 2-3 innings at FAU.
-In his most recent start on March 9 vs. Eastern Michigan, Walsh pitched just 6 1-3 innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts.
-On the season, Walsh owns a 5.19 ERA in 17.1 innings with 11 walks and 15 strikeouts.
-Sunday's starting pitcher for the Bearcats is to be determined.

OPPONENT BREAKDOWN
-Western Michigan went 26-29 overall and 14-12 in Mid-American Conference play in 2012, earning the No. 5 seed in the MAC postseason tournament.
-The Broncos are slated to finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference West Division in 2013, according to the preseason baseball coaches' poll.
-WMU return 14 lettermen, six position players, 10 pitchers (including two of three from weekend conference rotation) and welcome 10 newcomers.
-Western Michigan projected Friday starter, junior southpaw Steve Laudicina, was voted as one of the top three starting pitchers in the Mid-American Conference by league coaches, according to CollegeBaseballInsider.com.

THE SERIES VERSUS WMU
-Cincinnati and Western Michigan have played 19 ballgames all time.
-The Broncos own a 10-9 advantage in the all-time series.
-The first meeting occurred during the 1930 season with UC winning on the road 4-1.
-The two teams played each other in the 1961 NCAA District 4 Playoffs in Ann Arbor, Mich. UC, the Missouri Valley Conference champions, fell to Western Michigan, champions of the MAC, by a score of 8-1 in May 30.
-The most recent meeting between the Bearcats and Broncos took place over a four-game series during the 2011 season, with UC winning three of four.
